Advance practice nurses (APNs) may choose to be an independent contractor or an employee but also, they should be aware of legal, tax and financial implications of their selected status (Joel, 2018). Deciding on a job is a difficult task. There are essential factors to be considered before choosing the appropriate employment. Salary, benefits, advancements, safety, protection, or even historical background of the company are weighed carefully to promote personal and career satisfaction and contentment. In my opinion, salary does not provide an overall satisfaction but a vital factor to consider to ensure I am compensated for my efforts. Benefits is also an important matter such as medical insurance, retirement contributions, malpractice insurance, vacation, paid time off, flexibility and bonuses. All of these are considered negotiable for me. On the other side, some non-negotiables include workplace environment and organization background. I think it is a good idea to investigate on the company’s performance and history. These might include issues that concern their employees and customers, any pending litigations, unrightful terminations and other related issues. As a worker, I needed to ensure protection for myself and my career and avoid companies that promote hostile environment which could jeopardize professional image and obligations to the community. Other element includes advancement opportunities. I firmly believe in the concept of synergetic partnerships wherein between the organization and the employees, collaboration should be promoted to achieve outcomes benefitting both parties. I wanted a company that invest to their talents and encourages career growth as much as employees investing their time and effort in achieving the company’s goals and objectives. Organization focusing on the well being of their employees and promoting an empowering work environment where employees can feel treasured decrease turnover and improve productivity (Kirk, 2023). One benefit of formal employment as an APN is the doctrine of respondeat superior . As defined by Joel (2018), the doctrine of respondeat superior holds the employer accountable for any alleged malpractice or negligence by an employee. In this situation, practicing APNs can have additional level of protection aside from liability insurance. Another benefit includes insurance coverages such as health and malpractice insurances. The cost of health insurances is considerably high without employer’s contributions. And it is beneficial for the employee to have one in order to avoid tax penalties as health insurance is required by state regulations. In addition, having malpractice insurance can safeguard the professional career and finances of the APN.
