CAREER SWOT ANALYSIS 2 Introduction In today's rapidly evolving job market, it is essential to explore and consider various career options that align with our interests, skills, and aspirations. This paper aims to delve into three diverse yet promising career paths: nursing, pharmacist, and software developer. Each of these career options offers unique opportunities, challenges, and rewards. Examination of job descriptions, qualifications, work environments, and responsibilities associated with these roles offers valuable insights into their potential fit with our individual career goals. Additionally, a personal SWOT analysis will provide a deeper understanding of our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in relation to these positions. Through this exploration, we can uncover areas for growth and enhancement during our educational journey, such as engaging with professional organizations, internships, volunteer opportunities, and mentorship. Ultimately, this paper aims to inform and guide our decision- making process, setting a foundation for future success and fulfillment in our chosen careers. 3 Job Descriptions 1. Nursing Salary: The salary of nurses can vary from one individual to another based on various factors such as years of experience, geographical location, and specialization within the field. As per the May 2022 occupational employment and wages, the mean annual wage for software developers was $89, 101 (U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2022b). The median hourly wage estimates for registered nurses are $ 39.05. Job Qualification Requirements: To become a registered nurse, you typically need to complete a nursing program and obtain a nursing license. This can be achieved by obtaining: Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) certification from a recognized institution. Taking National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) for licensure. Other relevant state licensures. Work Environment: Nursing profession entails working in various settings such as hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and home-based healthcare. The work environment may entail working for long hours, including night shifts, and can be physically demanding and emotionally challenging (Career Profiles, n.d. -b). Nursing can be dangerous as it involves working with individuals with different infections and communicable disease and entails handling of toxic and potentially harmful products. Job Responsibilities: Nurses take part in direct patient care, such as administration of medication, observe and record patient behavior, monitoring vital signs, assisting with procedures, research ways of improving healthcare processes, and educating patients and their families about health conditions and ideal treatment plans. 2. Pharmacist Salary: The salary of pharmacists can vary based in various factors such as years of experience, academic qualifications, geographical location and the type of pharmacy an individual work in. As per the May 2022 occupational employment and wages, the mean annual wage for software developers was $129,410 (U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2022a). The median hourly wage estimates for registered nurses are $ 63.82.
CAREER SWOT ANALYSIS 3 Job Qualification Requirements: The minimum qualifications needed to be a pharmacist are bachelor’s degree in pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) from an accredited pharmacy program. After completing the program, you must obtain licensure by passing the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) and other state licensure depending on the location to practice (Career Profiles, n.d.). In most institutions, they require candidates to have at least 6 months of experience directly related to their specified duties and responsibilities. Work Environment: Pharmacists can work in various settings such as retail pharmacies, dispensaries, clinics, hospitals and pharmaceutical companies. Since they handle vital products, pharmacists work in clean and comfortable environments (Career Profiles, n.d.). They spend most of their day on feet, standing or working behind the counter. They must wear protective clothing or gear when working on sterile or hazardous medications. Job Responsibilities: Pharmacists are responsible for dispensing medications, providing medication counseling to patients, reviewing prescriptions for accuracy and potential interactions, and collaborating with healthcare providers to ensure appropriate medication therapy. They play a crucial role in promoting patient safety and optimizing medication outcomes. 3. Software Developer Salary: Like other professions, software developers’ salary varies depending on various factors such as individual’s experience within the profession, geographical location, industry of practice and the specific role. As per the May 2022 occupational employment and wages, the mean annual wage for software developers was $132, 930 (U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2022c). The median hourly wage estimates for software developers are $ 61.18 . Job Qualification Requirement: To become a software developer, the specific qualification may vary depending on the industry. For most entry-level software developer positions, one is required to have a Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or any other related field. Other requirements include: a proven experience as a Software Developer, Software Engineer or similar roles from recognized institutions. Knowledge of the software development life-cycle. Knowledge in programming language Creativity Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Other positions require individuals to have databases and Object- Relational Mapping (ORM) frameworks. Work Environment: As a dynamic professional, software engineers can work in various environments such as such as technology firms, software development companies, government entities, and corporate IT departments. Software developers often work in an office setting as they engage in computer related duties but other may work in a remote setting (Resource for Employers, 2017). Most of the software developers work at least 40 hours per week on regular business hours. The working time also includes extra hours such as weekends and nights to meet deadlines or resolve unexpected technical problems. Job Responsibilities: Software developers are responsible for designing, coding, testing, and maintaining software applications or systems. They analyze user requirements, design algorithms and flowcharts for creating new software

Limited knowledge in certain specialized areas. OPPORTUNITIES Growing demand for healthcare professionals, offering potential job opportunities. Ability to pursue further education or specialized certifications in the chosen fields. Opportunities to participate in internships or gain hands-on experience. Possibility of exploring different work environments within the chosen professions. Availability of mentorship programs or networking opportunities. THREATS Competition from other qualified candidates in the job market. Rapid advancements in technology impacting job requirements and skills. Potential changes in labor policies or regulations affecting the chosen professions. Economic factors or fluctuations impacting job availability or salary prospects. The need to continuously upgrade skills and adapt to industry changes to remain marketable. Reflection Section Delving deeper into the findings of the SWOT analysis and discussing them gives an insight on how they can impact the career positions I chose: nursing, pharmacist and software developer. Reflecting on the key strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats will provide a better view on how they can either benefit or pose a challenge in my pursuit of these career paths. Key Strengths: Strong communication and interpersonal skills: This strength will benefit you in all three job options. As a nurse, pharmacist, or software developer, effective communication with patients, colleagues, and clients is crucial for success. Your ability to establish rapport, listen actively, and convey information clearly will enhance your interactions and facilitate teamwork.
CAREER SWOT ANALYSIS 5 Detail-oriented and highly organized: This strength is particularly valuable in the roles of pharmacist and software developer. Attention to detail is vital for accuracy in medication dispensing and software coding. Being organized allows you to manage complex tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines, ensuring quality and efficiency in your work. Key Weaknesses: Lack of experience in the chosen fields: This weakness may pose a challenge initially when entering these professions. However, it can be addressed through internships, volunteer opportunities, and professional development programs. Seeking hands-on experience and actively pursuing learning opportunities will help bridge the experience gap. Need to improve time management and prioritization abilities: This weakness can affect your efficiency and productivity in all three job options. Developing strong time management skills, setting clear priorities, and utilizing effective planning techniques will enable you to handle multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and deliver high-quality work consistently. Key Opportunities: Pursue further education or specialized certifications: By obtaining advanced degrees or specialized certifications in nursing, pharmacy, or software development, you can enhance your qualifications and open doors to more challenging and rewarding positions within these fields. Key Threats: Rapid advancements in technology: As a software developer, staying up-to-date with the latest technologies is crucial. The continuous evolution of technology may require you to constantly upgrade your skills and adapt to new frameworks, languages, or tools to remain competitive in the field. Competition in the job market: All three job options have competitive job markets, and standing out among other candidates can be a challenge. Building a strong professional network, showcasing your unique strengths and experiences, and continuously developing your skills will help you overcome this threat. Conclusion In conclusion, the SWOT analysis has provided valuable insights into my strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in relation to the chosen career options of nursing, pharmacist, and software developer. From this SWOT analysis and further research, I have learned that while I possess certain strengths such as strong communication skills and a compassionate nature, there are areas I need to enhance, including gaining practical experience and improving time management. To address these areas, I should actively engage with professional organizations, seek out internships and volunteer opportunities, and seek mentorship to gain hands-on experience and expand my professional network.
