Hospital Nightmare According to Bimerew and Muhawenimana (2022), healthcare-related infections are primarily transmitted via contaminated hands in healthcare facilities. Hand hygiene is the single most effective method of infection prevention and control in healthcare settings (Kalata et al, 2013). Healthcare workers adhere to handwashing when the need and sense of self-protection arise, and often miss opportunities for hand washing out of limited knowledge or forgetfulness when they don’t see or feel the need for it (Bimerew and Muhawenimana, 2022). The World Health Organization hand hygiene technique and recommendations which were adopted by the hospital were used to define hand washing opportunities and measure the effectiveness of hand hygiene practice (Kalata et. al, 2013), Recommendations Duty to care was established and breached as proven by the patient having surgery and being admitted to the post-surgical care unit and acquiring a staph infection from negligence from the hospital not adhering to policies and procedures surrounding handwashing and changing gloves between patients. Injury to the patient was sustained by the introduction of a staph infection to Mrs. Smith’s blood stream which resulted in an empyema in her left lung which needed to be drained. She also contracted an autoimmune disorder from the complications of the infection. There is causation as there were eyewitnesses that saw Dr. Paltrow and residents not changing gloves in between the four patients in the post-surgical care unit. The first patient treated by Dr. Paltrow and his team was known to have a staph infection and all other patients treated acquired a staph infection. It was also observed by the patient, patient’s family, and nursing staff that Dr. Paltrow and students washed their hands in the patient’s room instead of outside of the room. The hospital is liable for negligence as policies and procedures by hospital employees were not being followed or enforced. There was a lack of training, signage, and an inadequate supply of glove sin each patient room prior to this even occurring. The recommendation is that the hospital was negligent and is liable for the staph infection acquired by Mrs. Smith due to the lack of adherence to policies and procedures for handwashing and glove changing between patients. Respondeant superior applies here as well because the physicians and nurses are hospital employees, and the hospital is held liable for their actions as well as the employees themselves. Biblical reference Ezra 4:22 states beware of being negligent in carrying out this matter; why should damage increase to the detriment of the kings” (NIV, 2011). Being negligent is detrimental in the healthcare field and can cost someone their life. It is extremely important to enforce and adhere to hospital policy and procedures not only to avoid legal matters, but most importantly to protect patients, Resources: Bimerew, M., & Muhawenimana, F.
