Concept Analysis Name: Definition/Explanation of the selected nursing concept : Compassion affects how care is given because it determines a healthcare professional’s capacity to attend to patients based on respect, dignity, and empathy. Compassion fatigue in nursing refers to the emotional and physical exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced ability to empathize and provide compassionate care that healthcare providers can experience when they are exposed to prolonged stress and trauma (Cavanagh et al., 2019; Bouchard, 2019). It is a form of burnout that results from the cumulative effects of providing care to patients who are suffering or in distress. Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring emphasizes the importance of cultivating caring relationships between healthcare providers and their patients, recognizing patients' unique needs and experiences, and providing care that is tailored to meet their individual needs (Gunawan et al., 2022). According to Watson's theory, the practice of caring involves a deep commitment to the welfare of others, and the cultivation of caring relationships is critical to providing high-quality care. However, the demands of caring can take a toll on healthcare providers, leading to emotional exhaustion, burnout, and compassion fatigue (Cavanagh et al., 2019). Watson's theory suggests that to prevent or mitigate compassion fatigue, healthcare providers must engage in self-care and develop strategies to replenish their resources (Gunawan et al., 2022). Compassion fatigue can also lead to decreased motivation and commitment to the work, which can result in turnover and staffing shortages in healthcare organizations. Model Case: Case: Samantha is a nurse who works in the ICU department of a busy hospital. She has been working long hours and has been exposed to a lot of patients who are critically ill and suffering. Samantha finds herself feeling emotionally exhausted, detached, and cynical toward her patients. She is having difficulty empathizing with their pain and feels like she is going through the motions of providing care without really feeling connected to her patients.
