Fire, flammability, and combustion were covered in Chapter 6. These are all applicable to the fire situation within the Garden Apartment. I'll go over each stages of a fire, the stages of the fire as they show up within the situation, and the differences between flashover, smoke explosion, and a backdraft. We have acquired knowledge about four distinct stages of fire. These stages include incipient, growth, fully developed, and the decay stage. Within the Garden apartment situation, two stages of fire are seen. The incipient stage of the fire was not witnessed by the company assigned to fire tac. The incipient stage was going on while the homeowner was talking with their neighbor. The first stage of fire seen by the initial arriving company is the growth stage. The move from growth to fully developed was quick and the firefighters on fire attack didn’t realize how rapidly this fire was changing. Engine 2's Lieutenant thought they were getting a decent knockdown on the fire, but the reality was that he and his crew were not and everybody on the exterior was able to see the transition from growth to fully developed by the change of smoke color and behavior. Decay is the final stage, as of this point in the situation this stage has not been seen. There is a few similarities between flashover, smoke explosion, and backdraft. Although, most people do not know the difference and interchange these words mistakenly. Flashover is the simultaneous ignition of nearly all combustibles in a confined area caused by thermal radiation. This is noticed when the firefighters directed their attention upwards using the thermal imaging camera. They observed the flames engulfing the area above them, the gradual descent of the thermal layers towards the ground, and the presence of intense heat within the room, which caused them to suffer some burns. Smoke explosion is when a smoke air mix falls within

its flammable range, which is why smoke is referred to as unburned fuel. The firefighters heard the fire crackling in the walls as they were walking down the hall. They also noted that the heat was up high and radiating from the walls. When the firefighters opened the apartment door, they witnessed a backdraft situation. The "starved flames" had oxygen introduced at the same time everything ignited and the flames came "to life". (Gann & Friedman) In conclusion, the event that took place in the garden apartment was not good. The level of heat and smoke, the interior of the apartment, the stage of the fire on arrival, and the oxygen content in the room. Firefighters should have cooled the room immediately after opening the door by disrupting the thermal layer with water. By doing so, they may have been able to prevent firefighters from being burned, possibly the apartment from flashing over, and the backdraft that met them at the door when they introduced more oxygen to the fire.
