Calculating Heating & Cooling Loads Class Activity - Chapters 14, 16, 17 Overview : From page 373 of the text, “Heating and cooling loads are formed by using variables and factors...Variables are data that are unique to a building. Variables relate to the specific location of the building and the specifications of the particular building. Variables include design temperature difference, areas of exposed building surfaces, infiltration or ventilation rates, people, lights, and appliances.” In this class activity, you are going to calculate the cooling load for our homes. Instructions : Task 1: Calculate. Visit this link for the BTU calculator. We are going to use the calculator at the top of the website, titled: “AC BTU Calculator” (and not the “General Purpose AC or Heating BTU Calculator”). Task 2 : Tabulate . List the rooms in your home and, using your best estimates for the entries, go room by room calculating the individual BTU requirements for each of the conditioned spaces. Example : Room BTU Calculation Kitchen 6,860 BTU Family 7,420 BTU Living N/A Bedroom 1 5,700 BTU Bedroom 2 5,700 BTU Bedroom 3 N/A ... Task 3 : Size . Total the BTUs from the individual spaces in your list. Divide the total number by 12,000 to convert BTUs to tons of cooling. 2.14 Task 4: Shop . Search online for an air conditioner that meets your calculated cooling needs. Enter the link below for the unit that you found https://www.theacoutlet.com/gsx130301-aruf29b14-2-5-ton-13-
