HW #2: Data Presentation & Analysis DEN 161 Upload on Canvas Before Class 4 Adopted from: Cardella, M. E., C. E. Nyquist, M. W. Ohland, and A. Van Epps, 2010, Ideas to Innovation PKG Purdue University : Boston, MA, Pearson Learning Solutions. Problem 1: Data Analysis Background: You are working for a manufacturing company as an air-pollution control expert. Your job is to find economical ways of cleaning the gas waste stream produced by the manufacturing process. Biofiltration is a promising technique that uses microorganisms to reduce pollutants in the gas stream, but you need to find out how large a biofiltration system would be needed at the plant. A typical system uses a packed bed of biological material inside a column through which the gas stream is run for treatment. A schematic with four sections of packing is shown below. Figure 1. Schematic of biofiltration column. In order to make a recommendation to your company (how many beds should be packed in column), you collect data by taking samples of the gas at various positions within the column. The results are in Table 1. Table 1. Results of data collection for biofiltration system Position (cm) 0 25 50 75 100 Concentration (mg/m^3) Sample 1 101.0 68.0 45.5 28.8 15.0 Sample 2 98.4 66.5 43.0 27.3 13.1 Sample 3 97.7 71.2 46.3 22.3 16.8 Problem: How many sections of packing would you recommend for a biofiltration column? What is your reasoning for this recommendation? Required Solution Steps: 1. Using Excel determine the average concentration at each position (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100). Discuss if the values make sense and if the values make you questions the sample method and the accuracy and precision of the data.

Using Excel determine the standard deviation of your samples at each position (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100). Discuss if the values make sense and if the values make you questions the sample method and the accuracy and precision of the data. You must justify your answers. 3. Develop a relationship between Concentration and Position for the biofiltration system. (linear, exponential, log, polynomial, etc.) a. Provide support for your answer by providing the best fit line and the R 2 value. 4. Use your solution for step 3 to extrapolate hypothetical concentration values at positions of 125, 150, 175 and 200 cm (as though more packing segments were added). Discuss if the values make sense? 5. Use a decision matrix to revise your best fit line. Criteria Weight Types of Relationships Linear Exponential 2nd Order Polynomial R 2 Realistic Extrapolation Simplicity of Equation SCORE HINT: This problem requires a detailed discussion.
