Lab Report #1 Sieve Analysis. Submitted by: Mina Abdelnour CE 341A 003 Report Submitted on: 9/22/2023 Group 2 ASTM Standard: D-422 Importance and Purpose: Understanding the distribution of particle sizes in a particular soil sample is the goal of sieve analysis. The particle size can have a significant impact on the soil's engineering attributes as well as its physical and chemical characteristics. The proportion of particles in a particular soil sample of different sizes can be found via sieve analysis. It is employed to examine the outcomes of various soil tests and to ascertain the distribution of grain size in a specific soil sample. This information can also
be used to assess the soil's physical and chemical characteristics, such as porosity, permeability, and shear strength. Additionally, sieve analysis can be used to choose the optimal soil type for a certain purpose, such as the layout of foundations or land clearin.
Equipment: 1. Sieves, a bottom pan, and a cover. (Note: Sieve Nos. 4, 10, 20, 40, 60, 140, and 200 are generally used for most standard sieve analysis work.) 2. A balance sensitive to 0.1 g 3. Mortar and rubber-tipped pestle. 4. Mechanical sieve shaker.

Calculations Percent Retained on each sieve(Rn) = mass before seiving / mass after sieving*100 EX. 500/169.228*100=33.84 Percent finer =100-sum Rn EX. 100-33.84=66.16 Mass loss during test = (mass before sieving- sum mass after sieving)/ mass before sieving *100 EX. 500-498.31/500)*100=0.33% okay if less than 2% Also Coefficient of Uniformity (Cu) and the Coefficient of Curvature (Cc): Cu = D60/D10 EX. D60=0.40 D30=0.24 D10 =0.08 So Cu =0.40/0.08= 5 and Cc = D30^2 (D60 D10). Cc=0.24^2/0.40*0.08=1.80

Discussion: A lab report on sieve analysis presents the findings after a thorough examination of a sample of material. It consists of information acquired about particle size and distribution. Illustrations of the particle size distribution, a description of the tools and procedures used, and all information gathered, including weights, sieve results, will normally be included in the report. sizes, as well as the outcomes of any wet/dry sieving, if relevant. Depending on the study's intended application, additional information to assess accuracy, such as the standard deviation of the results and the R2 value, may be supplied. The data are summarized in the report, together with any recommendations or findings. . Sieve analysis is a common laboratory technique for determining the particle size distribution of a sample material. The objective of the lab report is to offer a comprehensive, well-organized, and truthful account of the findings. Conclusion: The report on the sieve analysis provides vital information on the sample's size distribution and general characteristics. The results can be used to determine whether or not the sample is suitable for the intended use and whether it contains particles in a particular size range.
