Ergonomics is the science related to the interaction of humans and machines. A well-designed work space will reduce strain on the human body and the pain that results from strain. For your health and safety, it is important to ensure that your work area is ergonomically appropriate. E RGONOMIC T IPS FOR C OMPUTER U SERS W ORKING A REA Select a chair with back support. Position the top of the monitor just above eye level and directly in front of you to avoid neck strain. Sit arm’s length from the monitor. Adjust lighting to avoid glare. Select the shape of a mouse or other input device to comfortably fit your hand. Avoid twisting and bending by placing items within reach. Use a document holder that is placed in-line with the monitor. B REAKS Take frequent short breaks—for example, work for 20 minutes and then take 5 minutes off. Get up and move around for a longer period of time, or engage in an alternative activity, when you are spending several hours at a particular task. Give your eyes a break by intermittently refocusing on distant objects. P OSTURE Sit straight at the back of your chair. Keep both feet flat on the floor or on a footrest. Keep your head and neck in-line with your torso. K EYBOARDING Place your wrists and hands in-line with your forearms. Do not rest your wrists on the keyboard or table. Keep your fingers relaxed and curved slightly over the home row of the keyboard. Relax your shoulders. Keep your arms and elbows relaxed near the side of your body, with your elbows at a slightly open angle. Place the keyboard on a stable surface that will not bounce as you work. Do not use excessive force when pressing keys. [ CITATION Off16 \l 1033 ] Work comfortably! Work safely! Work without strain! a4b495602c42766cb7549a97198f3054245a3696.docx
