Module A4: Binary Phase Diagrams In this module, we will learn how to use free energy diagrams to construct binary phase diagrams. In a binary phase diagram, there can be different invariant reactions, depending on binary system. An Invariant reaction in a binary system is one occurring when three phases are in equilibrium. This occurs at a specific temperature and composition. Below is a list of invariant reactions for binary systems. Homotectic Phase Transition liquid 2 → liquid 1 + liquid 3 Catalectic Phase Transition solid 1 → solid 2 + liquid (e.g. Al-Sm) Syntectic Phase Transition liquid 1 + liquid 2 → solid (e.g. Na-Zn) Monotectic Phase Transition liquid 1 → solid + liquid 2 (e.g. Bi-Ga) Monotectoid Phase Transition solid 1 → solid 2 + solid 3 (e.g. Al-Zn) (separated by miscibility gap) Eutectic Phase Transition liquid → solid 1 + solid 2 (e.g. Pb-Sn)
Eutectoid Phase Transition solid 1 → solid 2 + solid 3 (e.g. Cu-Zn) Peritectic Phase Transition solid 1 + liquid → solid 2 (e.g. Fe-C) Peritectoid Phase Transition solid 1 + solid 2 → solid 3 (e.g. Cu-Sn)
