Module A1: Review of Thermodynamics We will begin the formal part of this course with the review of thermodynamics concepts you may have seen in your previous course (MSE202, MSE302). Thermodynamics is required for us to determine if an alloy is in equilibrium, and to predict if an alloy will change to a new phase under a given temperature. For a given system, we look at the change in Gibbs ∆G to determine if phase transformation will occur. Gibbs free energy (G) of a system can be described by the following equation: [1.1] H is enthalpy, T is absolute temperature, S is the entropy of the system. Enthalpy is a measure of heat content of a system and can be described by: [1.2] E is the internal energy of the system, P is the pressure, V is the volume. When a system is in the most stable state, it is said to be in equilibrium. For a system to be in equilibrium, it should have the lowest Gibbs free energy.
