**Balancing Redox Reactions in Acidic Conditions**

When the following equation is balanced properly under acidic conditions, what are the coefficients of the species shown?

\[ \_\_ \text{Zn} + \_\_ \text{H}_3\text{AsO}_4 \rightarrow \_\_ \text{Zn}^{2+} + \_\_ \text{H}_3\text{AsO}_3 \]

- Water appears in the balanced equation as a \_\_\_ (reactant, product, neither) with a coefficient of \_\_. (Enter 0 for neither.)

- How many electrons are transferred in this reaction? \_\_

Expert Solution
Step 1

Steps involved in balancing a redox reaction,

1) Write down oxidation numbers of all elements.

2) Identify the change in oxidation number and write down oxidation half reaction and reduction        half reaction separately.

3) Balance other than oxygen and hydrogen first in both reactions.

4) Balance oxygen by adding water molecules to the deficit side.

5) Balance hydrogen by adding H+ to the deficit side.

6) Balance electrons and Combine both the reactions
