BME|SIE 477|577 – Introduction to Biomedical Informatics Lab - Graduate Research | Applying Standards in Healthcare Objective: To identify and apply healthcare content standards. Context: Josephine Karr is a patient of Dr. Celia Johnson , a primary care physician. Josephine Karr has been having trouble breathing. Dr. Johnson is concerned and logs into her EHR to order lab tests for Josephine and to prescribe her medication. Dr. Johnson sends the lab work to Southwest Diagnostics that processes clinical laboratory orders. She also refers Josephine to a pulmonologist, Dr. Alessandra Romero . Dr. Romero receives Josephine’s patient summary into her EHR and then performs an X-ray in her office. The image is uploaded from Dr. Romero’s radiology system into Dr. Romero’s EHR. Josephine Karr uses CBS Pharmacy and manages her medications with an app on her phone that interfaces with Dr. Johnson’s EHR. Josephine’s health insurance is HealthSafe. Task : Draw a system-level diagram with boxes representing each system involved and arrows to show data flow between the systems. Label each arrow with the type of data being sent and the Health Content Standard being used. Pick the standard that you think is most appropriate and most widely adopted for the specific flow of information: HL7 V2, HL7 CDA, HL7 FHIR, DICOM (for Imaging), NCPDP Script, and X12. Note: All subsystems of interest are underlined Guidelines: You are encouraged to develop the system-level diagram electronically using software such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Powerpoint, or Lucidchart. Pictures of paper drawings are not acceptable. Format: Upload a single PDF to D2L.
