Purpose:
To recommend inspection of primary and secondary gas valves to assure proper operator-valve is
installed, and provide instructions for improved piping arrangement for the secondary gas-valve
operator.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
In some instances, difficulty has been experienced with the operator valve for the primary and sec-
ondary gas shutoff-valves when the O-Rings on the spool were not retained in the O-Ring grooves.
Accordingly, improved design O-Ring retention has been incorporated on factory units for several
years. However, there is concern that there maybe units in the field that have not been modified.
The improved design involves a change from perpendicular to dovetail-shaped O-Ring grooves
on the valve spool. Factory testing and field experience to date indicate that this modification has
resolved the problem.
Also, gas supply piping to the secondary shutoff valve can have different configurations. Some
configurations may not provide adequate supply of gas to the valve (see Figure 1).

ACTION REQUIRED:
Visually inspect existing primary and secondary operator valves to confirm that the latest vendor
design/part number changes have been incorporated. The primary operator-valve is part of the pri-
mary shutoff valve assembly (Solar P/N 916115C3) and is base-plate mounted. The secondary
operator-valve (Solar P/N 916154C2) uses NPT connections.
Inspect and modify gas supply piping to secondary operator-valve if not in conformance with re-
quirement specified herein.
Procedures:
1.
Check Mars turbine units in the field that have primary shutoff valve P/N 916115C3 and
secondary operator-valve P/N 916154C2 to ensure that the operator valves are the latest
configuration. If these valves are not of the latest configuration, proceed to steps 2 and
3 below; otherwise go to step 4.
2.
Remove Vendor P/N RPA-4339-159-3322V, part of primary shutoff valve (Solar P/N
916115C3) and replace with Solar P/N 186327-1 (Vendor P/N RPA-4339-159-3322X).
3.
Remove secondary shutoff valve operator (Solar P/N 916154C1) and install secondary
shutoff valve operator, Solar P/N 91654C2 (Vendor P/N RPA-4329-159-3327).
4.
Improve gas supply to the secondary shutoff pilot valve as indicated (see Figure 1).
5.
Visually check the secondary shutoff operator valve (Solar P/N 916154C2) supply
plumbing.
6.
If the operator valve supply plumbing is connected downstream of the pilot filter, FS
932 (Solar P/N 916121C1), remove plumbing as shown in Figure 1. Refer to Table 1 for
required parts.
7.
The operator valve supply plumbing must be connected only to the sensing line of S342
as shown in Figure 1.
