Introduction
Complex projects consist of numerous aspects, activities, and decision making processes. Which require different skills to achieve the projects needs. The use of terms in managing these projects is inevitable. The statement Richard Hackman, made may not work effectively for complex projects usually don’t go
well with the demand for skills and capabilities required in the management of complex projects. I disagree with Richard Hackman and maintain that teams are an important prerequisite in managing complex projects. This report is an argument that the utilization of teams in managing complex projects. It attempts to minimize the reason behind Richard Hackman’s statement and explain the importance of using teams and how projects leaders can ensure that teams remain an asset to the project. Argument for Team Utilization Richard Hackman’s states that it may not be best to work in teams in complex projects. When Explained by the belief that complex projects are sensitive and require a significant amount of work to ensure that their objectives are achieved. From Richard Hackman’s view, he considered teams prone to conflict, some slow in decision making due to too many ideas and the lack of creativity as members try to fit into the team (Allen,2014). These different aspects of complex projects require different skills, experience, and capabilities. These can be obtained by including team members who processes different strengths to ensure all aspects of the project are achieved (El Sofany,2014). When you are utilizing teams, the projects brings individuals together with different strengths, they then contribute to the
various aspects of the projects including budget management, technology, operations, and procurement (Zofi,2011).
The management of complex projects, teams ensure enhanced creativity because each team member brings invaluable ideas that can be used to accomplish project ideas. Based on the ideas, the most innovative ones can be used to enhance project performances (Zofi,2011).
The effective use of teams can simplify project tasks by distributing different tasks and responsibilities among the team members. Depending on each team members strengths, skills, and experiences, team members are given specific tasks to complete. This is to ensure that projects can be completed faster and in a professional manner, as opposed to where there are no teams (Zofi, 2011).
Recommendations for Team Utilization When it comes to the complexity of managing teams in projects, there may also be various challenges witnessed, this limits performances (Allen,2014). To a significant extent this explains Richard Hackman’s view on teams in the management of complex projects. In order to enhance efficiency of the team in managing complex projects, you will need to consider some of the factors that promote the teams success in the complex projects as follows.

Take the position of a team leader, not the manager: This calls for the project leader to play it’s role as team leader, effectively guiding the team members to achieve shared goals (El- Sofany, Alwadani,2014). Opposed to being a manager, a leader in hands-on and is part of the team. He/She will guide the team opposed to giving orders or tasking team members with doing the work. Identify the best expertise: Having the most effective team calls for the careful selection of the best talent and expertise. This ensures that the projects objectives are effectively achieved. Motivate the team: Most teams are more likely to be successful when there is motivation. As noted by (conill,2013) project leaders must ensure that the team is well remunerated, recognized, and rewarded for there hard work. This will ensure that team members are more committed to achieving project objectives. Enhance communication: Poor communication can hurt a team’s performance capabilities, leading to increased conflict and inefficiency in delivering task objectives. To develop effective communication channels is necessary to ensure information is well disseminated (Saone, et al, 2011). Communication also matters significantly. According to the media richness, face-to-face communication is very important in enhancing communication as opposed to written communication (Guffey & Loewy, 2012).
Involve team members: Team members want to be recognized, acknowledged, and feel as if their efforts and contributions matter in the projects (Conill,2013). It is therefore important to involve team members throughout the project. When working as a team you can accomplish so much more. Develop conflict management skills: There will always be conflicts occurring where teams are involved and this is why it is
important for project managers to develop conflict resolution skills (Hill & Lineback, 2013) This should ensure that conflicts do
not limit the projects ability to achieve it’s objectives.
Conclusion In conclusion, I disagree with Richard Hackman’s view on utilizing teams in complex projects, arguing that teams are highly important in the execution of projects. This happens when team members bring invaluable skills and expertise, ideas
and can share responsibilities to promote project performances. However, I concur that the management of the team is equally complex and the project leader must, posses various skills when necessary to managing the teams effectively.
Special emphasis is given to the team leadership, hiring individuals with the best expertise, effective communication, team member involvement, and effective conflict resolution. References: Allen, P (2014) Evolution complexity, uncertainty, and innovation
