BY DAY 7 OF WEEK 5 Create a discussion post in response to the following: Explain what learner-centered leadership looks like versus authority- centered leadership. Identify at least two policies in a Grand City school that are designed to reinforce authority and make the job of adult staff members more comfortable at the expense of student learning. Explain how you would revise the two polices to be more learner centered, and describe how you would “motivate the masses” to accept the policy changes. Cite evidence and examples form the Fullan texts to support your explanation. BY DAY 3 OF WEEK 6 Respond to the discussion posts of at least two of your colleagues by offering an alternative perspective or providing an additional insight. TEANNA GLASS LEARNER-CENTERED LEADERSHIP Within learner- centered leadership, it possesses numerous attributes that bring attention to the guarantee of success for learners. The qualities of learner- centered leadership include reframing transformation, supporting the development of resources and people, and prioritizing the culture of relationships, while also keeping the learner’s voice as a priority. While on the other hand, authority- centered leadership embodies the educator being in control. The qualities of this type of leadership include control, teacher centered and policy mandates. Through this sort of leadership, it is imperative for there to be order in the classroom. Secondly, within Grand City, there are many policies in place that enforce the staff member to be more comfortable at the expense of student learning. For example, with Chester Middle Schools’ Group Size Reduction, Dr. Tasha Robinson is concerned with disciplinary actions and the consequences aligned. She notices a higher rate in minority students and if she is making the correct decisions. I believe that with the proper leadership development trainings being implemented it would help all staff and leaders to be able to make solid decisions surrounding behavioral issues. Also, having the district review funding to have at least one behavioral specialist in the schools with help mitigate the teachers and leaders having to be consumed with how to handle the behaviors as they will have a trained resource to assist them, The second policy that would need to be amended surrounds technology access. Marcus Hearn is not able to effectively implement technology due to the lack of resources in school and at home. Technology is ever growing, and it is important for all students to have access to be tech savvy in the school and future workplace. To reduce this concern, the school district should create partnerships with organizations who help supply devices for the classrooms and at home for families as well as an Internet connectivity program. This will assist will the access for students
and teachers concerns for their lesson plans. With the schools being able to retrieve the additional support, learners will receive a new viewpoint for how to approach their lessons in a modern way. Further, Fullan (2011) asserts in his text, to take risks and learn you really must have the growth mindset…You take risks to learn. For Chester Middle School, these risks are imperative for them to grow to become better. By presenting the value add to the educators to show how it will improve their effectiveness in the classroom and help evolve their lesson plans, while also empowering the learners will be a value add. If the educators do not commit to the new plan of evolving, then they will contribute to the overall decline of the morale of the school and the learners continuing to fail. No one wants to be on the losing side of things and being able to show the educators this is an overall win, will gain their buy in. References Fullan, M. Final Thoughts For this week, I have discovered there has to be a perfect balance of learner-centered leadership and authority-centered leadership. Given the current culture of the school, it may require many adjustments before having the perfect leadership model. There should be constant collaboration and communication to ensure new methodologies are being introduced into the culture. As we move forward in our roles, we must ensure we understand who the key players are in each department and two how their role affects the current goals at hand for the school sector.
