Mission and Values: Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. Mission and Values Nicole K. Revell Unit 4 Assignment GB560: Designing, Improving, and Implementing Processes Dr. David Starnes November 29 th , 2023
Mission and Values: Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. Introduction The purpose of this assignment is to discuss the vision, mission, and values of a company selected from the Great Places to Work list. The company to be evaluated is Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. Wegmans is a regional private supermarket chain located in the United States that are known for their quality, taste, and cleaner ingredients. John Taylor (2018) suggests four big strategies that will influence Wegman’s employee experience relating to corporate values. This assignment will discuss ideas from a CEO perspective to expand and envision business values to achieve a greater success. There will also be additional discussion of two companies that adjusted their mission statement and the impact the change had involving the company and their stakeholders utilizing the Burkus standards. A proper explanation of the process and importance associated with adjusting a mission statement will be described in further discussion. Overview and Description of Goals Overview of Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. Wegmans first began around 1916 by two brothers, John and Walter Wegman and is currently serving communities reaching in over 110+ locations in only seven states. Wegman’s brings a unique shopping experience to their customers by designing “an open-air market ambiance, the selection of foods, and the award-winning service” (Wegmans, 2023). This grocery market is often marketed as a tourist attraction bringing in customers that do not have a Wegmans near them, as it is considered a fun outing. Wegmans currently has over 50,000 employees that are working towards a common goal of “being the very best at serving the needs of our customers, and every action we take is made with this in mind” (Wegmans, 2023).
Mission and Values: Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. Wegmans continues to pledge to maintain continuous improvements to both their customers and employees. Vision, Mission, and Values Wegmans’ mission statement is what they believe in as it is an added tagline next to their mission description. Katie Wolf (2020) talks about how “defining a set of values can help unify your team by helping to make better hiring decisions, hold your team to higher standards, and work together more effectively toward your ultimate goals,” which are similar attributes as Wegmans’ messages. Wegmans’ vision, mission, and values are an important feature to their brand. Their vision statement incorporates their customers and their people as they make a pledge to always improve and deliver their best. The mission statement of Wegmans is ultimately what they believe in as a company. Their mission statement is “at Wegmans, we believe that good people, working toward a common goal, can accomplish anything they set out to do” (Wegmans, 2023). The goal of the company is to set out to be the best while serving the needs of their customers. They believe their goal is achievable as long as they are fulfilling the needs of their customers. They have more simplified values as a company. The company describes their values as simplification efforts. The values include caring, respect, making a difference, empowerment, and high standards. Their values go into the success of every person while pursing excellence in everything the company chooses to do. Systems Relationship Wegmans is a prideful company and delivers the best everyone. Their mission statement drives the team. Their main focus is to “help people live healthier, better lives through

Mission and Values: Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. exceptional food” (Wegmans, 2023). The mission statement ties into the values of the company. Katie Wolf (2020) created a list to follow as a guide and discusses an important step of a business being able to frame their values according to the teams culture. Being able to frame those values may work best in a different style compared to different businesses. The value of Wegmans is more simple, clear, and easy to understand. They discuss their values as a guide to “care about the well-being and success of every person. High standards are a way of life, and they choose to pursue excellence in everything they do” (Wegmans, 2023). The company values their community and makes a difference in the community they serve. Most importantly, the company makes it a priority of a value to respect, listen and empower their people. They encourage their people to make decisions and improve their work, which benefits the customers and company, by following the guides of their values. Simplification efforts was also discussed into four main areas of supply chain focus incorporating the mission and values of Wegmans. Procurement and costs are constantly being measured and are always considered for growth opportunities. Their four areas of focus include a simplified new item setup, simplified transportation, simplified receiving, and simplified store replenishment (Wegmans, 2023). Their simplified values set up have used a critical logistic data that also partners up with indirect procurement for support. Most importantly, “corporate values are really the heart of a company,” (Wolf, 2020) and Wegmans is prideful in their decisions. The company’s efforts of using supply chain simplification includes an important investment that provides better tools, systems, and processes to all team members. Aligning their supply chains will deliver incredible customer service.
Mission and Values: Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. Additional Background Information of Wegmans Founded in 1916, Wegmans made their mark by two brothers, John and Walter Wegman. In their current 100 stores, Wegmans has created a name for themselves. The company is honored by the American Lung Association for removing all tobacco products from their stores in 2008 (Wegmans, 2023). The company also supports early childhood learning by opening a Wegmans Wonderplace. Wegmans is also committed to being a good neighbor in all the communities they serve by donating pounds of food every year to reduce hunger in their neighborhoods. The company also believes in creating a healthier and better planet by growing organically near their store locations. Wegmans took priority in creating a brand for themselves that offer a combination of quality and value to their neighborhood markets. Growth Goals for Wegmans As a well-known establishment in a fresh market food industry, the success of the company continues to grow with the guidance of their clear and simplified vision. The issue that the company runs into though is that not everyone is being served, which means not everyone is allowed the opportunity to experience the value of Wegmans and this is an issue that needs improved. To be able to achieve those goals of serving more, the company needs to expand more into additional communities and states to establish a more sustainable future. To increase serving in the communities more, Wegmans can expand their volunteer work and help additional neighborhoods to be stronger instead of just focusing on their immediate surroundings. Wegmans had an impressive 2022 of giving back to the community. They were able to donate 32.8 million pounds of food. The company also donated $18.5 million to local non-profit agencies throughout their communities. The customers of Wegmans in 2022, donated
Mission and Values: Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. an impressive $2.2 million to reduce hunger in their neighborhoods (Wegmans, 2023). In 2023, Wegmans in expected to exceed those goals. As the company continues to expand, additional communities will be supported in additional states. Wegmans has a major belief in taking take of the planet. They believe that it is the responsibility of all of us to assist with creating a healthier and better planet. The company insists this can be accomplished by growing organically, which Wegmans does near their stores, eliminating waste, and reducing our carbon footprint. The company’s goals are in order of by 2024 to reduce 10 million pounds of in-store plastic packaging. In 2025, the company plans to reach a 95% recycling rate, and by 2026, eliminating heavy-duty diesel trucks from their private fleet (Wegmans, 2023). The issues that the company might run into is the additional costs in relation to their near future goals with the amount of stores the company has. If more stores were up and running and accessible in more than seven states, there’s greater opportunity to reach these goals as there is increased opportunity. Taking care of their people and community is an important factor to the success of the company and achieving goals while having the opportunity to express value and growth for the future of Wegmans. Mission Analysis Mission Analysis and The Relation of Wegmans If a business is not producing results, the company may feel that they need to change their mission statement so there is some sort of alignment. When deciding to make these changes, it is important understand what a mission statement is. Author Lynda Silsbee (2021) discusses that a mission statement is the company’s “why” and that it clarifies who they are, what they do, and who they do it for. Changing a mission statement has a sole purpose to

Mission and Values: Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. improve and reflect a positive outcome. Although, like every situation, there could be some disadvantages to changing a mission statement. There should be commonality and understanding of the message so that everyone can carry out the goal. There still needs to be a clear vision of the why, what, and who. If there is no clear understanding, then there are difficulties that may arise, and support would be one of those difficulties to overcome. If the business is not moving in a direction someone likes or is intended to move, then the most effective and immediate next step is to reconstruct a new mission statement, one that everyone can get behind on. There is no harm in changing a mission statement as most businesses begin with the former, and eventually find themselves moving on to a newer, improved one (Silsbee, 2021). This time of change allows a company to reflect on what is most important and effective. They should communicate their vision with stakeholders and employees as they play a huge role in executing and supporting the mission statement. As a company continues to grow and evolve, restructuring the mission statement is a bold change reflecting to what is most important to the company as a whole. Impact of Changing Mission As a company begins to change a mission statement, the company is changing the goal or focus of what the company plans to achieve. Changes in a mission statement should involve everyone. That might include stakeholders, employees, and customers. A mission statement is to be supported. This could potentially help or hurt a business but has the sole purpose to help a business to move forward in a more positive direction. When change seems to occur, there are always advantages and disadvantages a business may experience. A major advantage to changing a mission statement is the demand for an
Mission and Values: Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. increase in innovation. Companies may decide to change their mission because there are new or expanded goals, the organization has changed, there is a new audience, etc. (Coon, 2022) that affect the current mission statement. To overcome these objections, companies should refocus their mission statement to show all parties involved where they stand and where to envision the company going for the future, and how they will achieve those goals together as a unit. When creating a new mission statement, it should be created to form an alignment. Aligning the company focus will create more motivation and encouragement, achieving short and long-term goals. When creating change, there are some disadvantages that may occur. One of those disadvantages may be that the values of current and future employees might not align with the new vision of the company. For current employees, it may be that they joined the company based on the previous mission statement, goals, and values and are not as receptive to the change of the new mission statement. That could create a lot of churn or immediate loss of employees, putting the company in a bind of being understaffed. Additionally, the community might not be receptive to the change. The community is supportive and may benefit for what currently is the focus of the company and may be fearful of the change as it might not benefit the community as well as it has in the past causing a negative impact to additional relationships that can be built for the future. Two Companies – Meeting Burkus Standards According to Burkus’ standards of a company that changed their mission is Netflix. A memo was released to employees and investors that shifted their focus from only distributing content digitally to committing to becoming a leading producer of original content that allows the opportunity to be nominated and win both Emmys and Oscars. The old mission statement
Mission and Values: Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. was to become the best global entertainment distribution service, however that changed after a growth downturn in early 2012. The new mission statement is simple and “to entertain the world.” This allowed the business the expand and enforce a new purpose. This was a smart decision for the company as their revenue increased 57% annually (Anthony, 2019). Their goal is to compete on a more advance level of streaming. Starbucks is a second success story of changing their mission statement. When Starbucks had a mission statement that incorporated 75 stores, it was “to establish Starbucks as the premier purveyor of the finest coffee in the world while maintaining our uncompromising principles as we grow” (Peiper, 2023). The company had a vision to put people first and profits last. Their vision became a steppingstone into the development of a new mission statement. In March of 2023, the company’s new mission statement is simple: “with every cup, with every conversation, with every community – we nurture the limitless possibilities of human connection” (Peiper, 2023). This mission meets the Burkus standards because of the recognition the change has that creates a connection of fundamental human need. The changed mission statements of Netflix and Starbucks is clear, direct, and shows passion for their changes and how they plan to achieve their goals. Process for Mission Change The mission of Wegmans Food Markets is “at Wegmans, we believe that good people, working toward a common goal, can accomplish anything they set out to do” (Wegmans, 2023). Silsbee (2021) discusses that a mission statement is the company’s “why” and that it clarifies who they are, what they do, and who they do it for. Wegmans already has a powerful mission statement, but there are some changes that can be made to offer a more direct approach involving some sort of interpretation of the product or service they offer. The mission lacks any mention of

Mission and Values: Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. the community as well since it is a focus of one of their growth goals. I would propose an improvement to the mission statement to all the parties involved, such as, stakeholders, employees, customers, and community, by adding the community connection, continuous growth, of the services and products offered by Wegmans since they believe in a healthy approach. The new mission statement would be “at Wegmans, we believe in good people to deliver a product healthier and better for us, the community, and the planet.” This new mission statement discusses the what and why, as well as the who for the future of the company. Values Values-Based Leadership Values-based leadership is a step into the evolution of how we choose to engage in business (Gamb, 2018). These ideas are drawn up individual and others’ values that create some sort of direction and motivation. The concept of values-based leadership drives from the motivation of values and personal belief. VBL creates a common set of values for a business and their employees allowing the opportunity to work together and stay aligned. There is a greater success when there is a leader encouraging similar practices and values and using it as a guide. When everyone is aligned for the business, there is a higher rating of performance, engagement, and achievement of goals. There are specific traits and qualities that values-based leaders possess allowing them to be successful in their role. Importance of Values-Based Leadership There are several important factors of values-based leadership that reflect both personally and professionally. A person can reflect on their most recent decisions and determining what motivates them by using the values-based leadership. Determining the motivations and decisions
Mission and Values: Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. and how those were made, gives the person an opportunity to reflect and evaluate their personal and professional values. A person can then decide on what is most important to them and apply those decisions to a team. This also gives them the opportunity to make decisions from a different viewpoint to strengthen a team. If a team experiences shared values, then there is an improved and successful alignment with better communication amongst each other. There is a more open and available approach to communicate with each other that involve all topics. There is an openness and freeness when speaking with one another and still being respectful of everyone’s thoughts and opinions. Overall, communication is improved and enhanced within the company, employees, and their customers. VBL helps build and environment of trust to determine an idea of how productive the team will be or not (Gamb, 2018). A team is able to be strong and successful when everyone works together to achieve a common goal. Best Practices for Sharing Values Core values are essential to any organization as they assist with improvements and engagements. These values form important parts of a company’s culture. There are best practiced methods that the Forbes Expert Panel (2020) introduce. One best practice is to use an engaging format. This can be done by displaying a video from a leader or creating and using onboarding software. Being able to talk about what works and doesn’t work (Forbes, 2020) is another best practice for sharing values, because it displays the effectiveness of communication. Being able to tie each value to the job description is a great practice of sharing values as well. By doing this, a company can promote the importance of values to each team member. This will create a team who aligns with the company’s core values.
Mission and Values: Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. Values Integration According to Gamb (2018), the company’s purpose and mission are most powerful when combined with the core values. Integrating core values completes a statement and projects a cohesive, well-thought-out position to shareholders, investors, and customers (Gamb, 2018). One way a company can fully integrate values is by open communication and sharing their experiences of how core values have been applied into their daily lives to resolve any issues they may have encountered. Team leaders, employees, and management can all have the opportunity to promote their experience during meetings and shifts to assist with staying on track of following the core values. There must be team and induvial accountability of maintaining and practicing the core values. Communication and accountability ensure everyone is on the same page to maintain the success of the company. Wegmans has their core values they exercise and display in all their store. The values include caring, respect, making a difference, empowerment, and high standards which are also some of my personal core values. I completed the values exercise from the Fowler video. The results from the exercise indicated that my general life values include: 1. Personal Growth: Mentally, spiritually, professionally, and personally 2. Leadership: Personal and professional development creating a strong team while being a strong leader. 3. Respect: This is for me as well as others, simply treating others the way you would like to be treated. 4. Learning and Knowledge: Gaining new knowledge and sharing what I have been taught. 5. Work Life Balance: Establishing the right blend of life and work responsibilities.

Mission and Values: Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. 6. Community: The people that surround me, motivate me, and support me whether they are near or far. The process I used to collect this data was self-reflection and creating a ranking system to what I value most and by answering the two questions that Fowler (2017) asked, which are “how do you spend your money and how do you spend your time?” Time and money are used to share my value with the ones who touch my life. By combining and practice similar core values of myself and Wegmans, my assistance will continue to bring future success. Determining Values Integration Wegmans is a small grocery market that provides healthier and better options to everyone. Since they are already in the food market industry, local communities are an important part of the business as food pantries are shifting their requests towards healthier options, and Wegmans contributes each year donations of fruits and vegetables to ensure the success of the community support. By integrating social relationships and community support into Wegman’s core values, additional goals and milestones will continue to be achieved. Social relationships integration assists the company on building and furthering the connections with customers, employees, and the community. Establishing those relationships will increase the success of expanding in various locations. Focusing on the community will gain trust and bring awareness to the company of who they are and what they have to offer. This is also an opportunity to advance the grocery shopping experience. A little emphasis on community integration will increase the values of Wegmans. There will be an opportunity to allow more community involvement, donations, and healthier options to raise awareness into the offerings and involvements of Wegmans. Food donations offer unhealthy options to families because it is
Mission and Values: Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. a cheaper option, but the donations from Wegmans have increased in better food quality practicing in their beliefs. Process for Gaining Stakeholder Input into Integration A business is only successful with the involvement of the stakeholders. Gaining stakeholder input must first start with being able to identify who the stakeholders are. In the instance of Wegmans, the stakeholders include investors, owners, employees, and customers. The process I would use to gain stakeholder input into integration includes a guidance from Harry Hall (2023): 1. Involve the stakeholders and get them all talking with one another. 2. Listen to one another. 3. Lead with integrity, always remember the company values. 4. Engage with the stakeholders and involve them in the estimates. 5. Work together as a team. 6. Manage all expectations of the stakeholders. 7. Always say thank you, show appreciation. 8. Most importantly, communicate. Integrating the relationships from the stakeholders will achieve more success to living up to company and personal values and assist with the growth of a company. Process for Measurement of New Values Results Surveys and questionnaires are going to be the measurement tool used to measure the success of new values. Employees, customers, and community sponsorships will be the ones asked to participate in either electronic or paper surveys or questionnaires. The purpose of
Mission and Values: Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. completing these is to provide insights on where the success is and where areas of improvements can be conducted. The surveys are distributed to different parties but will still have the same type of effectiveness when determining the results. The results will provide feedback to the stakeholders ensuring everyone involved is aligned on how the company can improve. It is valuable to issue surveys that will provide feedback to a company giving the business an opportunity to grow and improve. Conclusion Wegmans is a small, but well-known food market serving in seven states with over 100 locations. With the assistance from the new CEO, the goal of Wegmans is to expand their locations to serve more communities and to maintain in creating a healthier environment by taking care of the planet. With enough support and funds, Wegmans will be able to enter into additional states. This assignment was able to express the company’s values, mission, and vision and how the values of the new CEO will be able to provide support and guidance on how to maintain the company’s success involving the stakeholders and following a specific process.
