In your final project, you will develop a change plan for Microsoft. To begin, you will need to analyze the case study and diagnose the problem. This discussion will help you to become more familiar with the six parts of the Analysis and Diagnosis section of the final project case study. Refer to this section in the  Final Project Guidelines and Rubric  as you complete your discussion. For your discussion, choose one of the parts above. Become an “expert” on that part of the final project and the information related to that part from the case study. Include the following information in your initial post: 1. Include which part you chose to become an expert on in your title. For this assignment I decided to decipher what the problem is at Microsoft. After reading through the case study, I have concluded that it is first important to look at the whole picture. Typically, in situations it is important to identify the problems to then find the other moving pieces and the effect of how this problem is affecting the business. After Identifying the problem, you would then need to assess the impact of the problem, what the organization needs are to drive the change or to come to a solution, find the variables to see the cause and effect and what the constant is and what are other pieces that should be considered. This will help you identify the underlying causes and the gaps to understand what is needed to get to the solution that will positively affect the business. This is not always the case, however. Sometimes it’s easier to understand the other pieces before you get to identify the problems.

Sometimes it’s easier to understand the other pieces before you get to identify the problems. 2. Summarize your understanding of what you need to do for your chosen part and the related content from the case study. In this case study it was very clear that the problem was ignored for many years. Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft founded the company in 1975. He ran the company for 25 years until he handed it over to Steve Ballmer 17 days before the stock market crashed. This was a very challenging time for a company like Microsoft to grow and go through a leadership change. Microsoft was a great company to work for, or so people thought. Microsoft had lots of opportunities that really ended up hurting them very badly. Some of these areas were employee ratings, morale was at an all-time low, and employees just started leaving. This was causing a very toxic workplace and ended up hurting the business in the stock market as well. It was a well-known practice at Microsoft to be reviewed on a “stack ranking” performance management system. “Stack ranking is a forced ranking performance management system where you measure employee performance against that of your entire workforce, rather than your established individual performance standards. In its traditional form, you reward the top 20% of performers and fire the bottom 10%.” (Symonds, 2023) This was one of the items that needed attention drawn to. The company
was promoting a workplace that was toxic. They rewarded those that were doing what the company needed and meeting or exceeding metrics, however encouraging that their colleagues failed. This was creating a workplace where you had to target one another, completely opposite what our workforce demands now, teamwork. It was a race against each other to see who one could go up against the other without any collaboration. The second problem I found very concerning is that Glassdoor rating, which rates a company in employee satisfaction. This is important because in 2011 the rating was 46%. Which was a starting to grow but should be considered why was it this low? There are underlying causes and gaps in employee satisfaction causing turnover which really ends up hurting the company’s financial health as it is very financial impacting with continued turnover. This also portrays a bad image of the company and their true image of who they are. In terms of how this was financially hurting this business it really wasn’t any harm. Microsoft was continually growing their profits and it was never in question of the company collapsing. However, due to the new leadership changes and providing a clear image, values and mission has put the control back into the employees to contribute and share ideas to grow and succeed with each other. Satya himself “Many companies aspire to change the world. But very few have all the elements required: talent, resources, and perseverance. Microsoft has proven that it has all three in abundance.” (Ibarra, 2018) Ibarra, H., Rattan, A., & Johnston, A. (2018, June). Satya Nadella at Microsoft: Instilling a growth mindset .
