2 Self-Reflection In my current role, I work as the operations coordinator for the Assertive Community Treatment or ACT teams across the country. I work for a nonprofit organization called Merakey. ACT teams give community based treatment to people battling severe mental illness across the states. As operations coordinator, I keep track of gathering all necessary documents needed for CARF accreditation and help with credentialing for all new hire and current employees. Even though I am not a leader of any specific individuals, I have learned that being a leader is much more than that. A effective leader must lead with a purpose and have confidence and self- awareness in the workplace. After taking the 16 personalities questionnaire, I learned that I have the leadership style of a Consul. Deborah Day defines consuls as extroverted observers who encourage, lift, and strengthen each other to spread positive energy. This is me in a nutshell. My strengths as a leader consist of being loyal, strong practical skills, good at connecting with others, and having a great sense of duty. Some weaknesses I have noticed are being inflexible, vulnerable to criticism, needy, slightly selfless, and worried about my social status (Day, 2023). I believe I can improve on all of my weaknesses and that will help me excel in the future. Throughout the course, I have learned a lot about my professional relationship management skills. Building authentic relationships with staff members and having great communication skills can make you a leader and, in my role, I believe I have both characteristics, plus others. Watching the week five lecture made me realize how much being a leader is more than just a title. Being in administration tends to be a great fit for someone with the professionalism I have when it comes to relationships in the workplace. In my current role, I communicate with everyone from new hires, human resources, vice presidents, directors, and
3 trainers. I have a wide range of communication styles that help me to build relationships with all members in each level of hierarchy. In the workplace, even though I excel on my communication skills, I have some things that can be worked on. One of the things I could work on is having confidence. I lack confidence to make professional decisions for myself and for my organization. Having the proper confidence would help me to be able to show how much of a leader I can be in my career path and to prove to others I am a leader without being a manager. Because today’s workforce is multigenerational and multicultural, it can be difficult to coordinate between the two. Within my organization, building a culture that works for all staff members is the best way to make everyone successful and happy. The most affective company culture is one built and reinforced by its staff. Assertive Community Treatment or ACT is a community based program who works with all cultures and lifestyles. Being a leader in healthcare, engaging with workplace cultures and community cultures are crucial. According to a Harvard Business Review, written by Scott Behson, there are 4 ways an employee can contribute to the culture of its organization. The 4 ways to contribute to your organizations culture is to get to know people on a personal level, celebrate others by being creative, show up for people without resentment, and set the example. By demonstrating your willingness to take on more responsibility and helping to improve your workplace, it proves you’re a reliable role model to lead within your organization. Practicing self-empowerment at work will lead others to do the same and help establish a cultural balance between all staff members (Behson, 2022). In all, I have learned so much about what it takes to be an effective leader. I have learned strengths and weaknesses within my current role as operations coordinator at a nonprofit and what I can do to fix my issues. In the future, I plan to have successful leadership and professional
