Report
3.01 Responsibility to Clients is described as acting in the best interest of the clients we serve. Taking the steps necessary to support clients’ rights, maximize benefits, and do no harm. To also be knowledgeable about and comply with applicable laws and regulations related to mandated reporting (BACB, 2022). Responsibility to clients sums up the core principals of the ethics code for board certified behavior analysts. If we are being deceitful, withholding information, not remaining competent within our field, implementing interventions they don’t understand, giving out their private information, etc. Then we are upholding the core values of what the ethics code stands for. Maintaining competence’s primary purpose is to ensure that all professionals within the field are up to date on new research, discoveries, approaches, applications, and evidence-based materials. New discoveries and research are becoming available all the time. We would be doing a great disservice to those we are trying to help by not maintaining our competence. Everyone has the right to privacy. Protecting confidentiality information ensures that client’s private information is not being handed out. It protects the clients from discrimination, their information being used in ways that it shouldn’t, and gives the client peace of mind that, unless given written permission, no one can access their information. Practicing within the scope of competency ensures that no professional is providing services that they are not qualified to provide. All professionals are expected to practice within their scope because they have acquired the training necessary to do so. No professional should ever practice in an area that they have not be trained in or received the necessary credentials. Multiple relationships are something every professional should strive to avoid. Multiple relationships create a conflict of interest. This is unethical and unprofessional. Your motivation and your credibility could be in jeopardy if not rectified as quickly as possible with proper documentation. Soliciting testimonials from current clients for advertising is unethical because it could put undue influence on the client. Clients should not` feel compelled to provide a testimonial. Behavior analysts are there to relieve stress and anxiety, not add to it for fear of repercussions. My initial response to my cousin would be to explain to her that while I appreciate her wanting to entrust her child to me, however, it is against the BACB ethical guidelines. It is against the guideline of multiple relationships; it would create a conflict of interest. I would also breach the guideline pertaining to communication about services. Because it seems it is a casual encounter, it is unlikely that explaining the scope services and specifying the conditions would come up during dinner. It would also be difficult to explain such things since an assessment and intake have not been performed. I offer to provide her with a referral to another behavior analyst that can help meet her needs without breaching the guidelines. If I were to use my professional services to help my cousin, it could cause issues between my cousin and I. It could mean confrontation due to disagreements about services and interventions. Professionally, I could lose credibility and standing in the eyes of my colleagues. My motivation and dedication to other clients could be called into question. Reference:
