Unit 2 Discussion 7 Dimensions of Applied Behavior Analysis Applied Applied is the first of the seven dimensions of ABA. Applied refers to ABA’s commitment to improve quality of life by effecting improvements in behavior (Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2020). Behaviors targeted for change must be socially significant to the participant (Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2020). Behavioral Must be behavioral. Criterion for behavioral includes that the behavior chosen must be the behavior chosen for improvement, the behavior must be measurable, and when behavior change is observed, whose behavior has changed must be determined (Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2020). Analytic Analytic describes when the observer has determined a functional relation between variable manipulation and a consistent measurable change in behavior (Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2020). Technological The criterion of technological is achieved when all operative procedures implanted are identified and described in a way that any reader has a reasonable chance of repeating the procedures (Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2020). This refers to process of describing relevant principles that are in connection with the procedures and interpretations of how or why the procedures were effective (Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2020). This enables others to derive similar procedures from the same principle (Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2020). Effective A procedure is considered effective when the application of interventions and procedures improve the target behavior to a practical degree. The behavior change must produce behavior changes that are considered clinically or socially significant (Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2020). Generality Generality is achieved when the results last over time, can be observed across environments in which they were not taught, or spreads to other behaviors that were not targeted. The article I’m using has to do with the effects of detection dogs on passenger behavior at border control ports. During the study passenger behavior was observed under different environmental variables. The article didn’t state that behavior was attempting to be changed only observed but it was based on behavioral observation so may be considered behavioral. It observed eye contact, vocal contact, gestures, and facial expressions (Williams & Sharp, 2023). It was analytic, the researcher efficiently described consistent measurable changes in behavior that correlated with manipulation of various environmental variables. It described the procedures and manipulation of variables as well as how data was recorded and the results. The procedures and descriptions were easy to follow and understand and could easily be repeated. So it would be considered technological.

It did not really describe the principles that the study was derived from but did a few details on some background related to the study. It does not indicate any behavior targeted for change so effectiveness may not have been achieved. However, it does provide some insight on potential uses for future application that may be helpful in eliciting behavior change. Generality, though not necessarily indicated in this study could be achieved from it. It provided some examples of other environments and conditions where the information provided could be used. So, the study does not indicate generality but could reach this criterion through further study and experimentation. While the study did not meet all requirements to be considered a scientifically good research example. It did however meet most of them. The research was thorough and descriptive. Observations were measurable and consistent and it created new hypotheses for future research. If effectiveness were to be applied to the study it would provide further validity of their research as well as generality. Effectiveness is important for indicating how well the procedure works and provides supporting evidence. Generality would be useful for providing information to other researchers for further investigation. Discussing principles it was derived from would provide more information on the why of the experiment and provide insight into understanding the results. BACB credential requirements include earning a degree from an accredited university (BACB, 2022). As well as, a large number of supervised field hours, pass an exam, and maintain competence in the field (BACB, 2022). The information provided was already known to me. There was little that was surprising to me. The supervised hours are a lot but with good reason.
