Bermeo 1 Organizational Culture Nicholas Bermeo Business, Valencia College MAN-3240 Dr Marsha Butler February 11, 2024
Bermeo 2 Organizational Culture The role of a leader plays a crucial factor in developing and supporting a positive organizational culture. Through this week reading and the video we watched I’ve been able to highlight some examples. Most organizations use guidelines and mandated expectations which lead to the behavior of their employees. These are in the form of mission statements, code of ethics/values statements, vision statements, and polices/procedures (Organizational Behavior, 2021). Having a leader who recognizes and enforces these guidelines is a positive way of developing a positive organizational culture. Our textbook mentions that “A bad leader who disregards the rules and behaves as they please set a terrible precedent and gives permission for other employees to behave the same way. Leaders should lead their teams by example and set the standard for expected behavior” (Organizational Behavior, 2021, para. 4). Having a bad leader falls into the hands of the organization as they have control over who they hire. Therefore, by developing a hiring process that focuses on hiring individuals who embody the mission and vision of the company leaders who will help in supporting a positive organizational culture. The Individual hired to the position should lead by example, as their behavior will set the standard for the organization. This individual shall also recognize and reward employs who display positive behavior, hardworking effort, and trust. In doing so this will increase morale in the workplace. I found Amira El-Gawly’s video about her sharing her vision of Manifesta and of a healthy workplace culture to be very inspirational. In the video she speaks about how companies have been treating new hires, not embracing their skills, and many organizations being a “sink or swim” type of environment. El-Gawly mentions “very little definition of what is my role in this organization, how does it connect to the mission of the organization, and so how can I then use my talents to achieve this mission to bring my best ideas, my best strategies my best
Bermeo 3 collaborations” (Beyond theTwelve Collective: Amira El-Gawly and Manifesta, 2021). This is reference to organizations simply throwing new hires into the fire by assigning them to projects or having them be bombarded with reading and writing emails all day. What I grasped from what she was trying to speak of is that leaders in organizations should begin accepting the unique skills of these new hires and utilize them to their best potential. Leadership can be taught to new employees in various ways. These strategies include mentorship and coaching, leadership communication, integration of culture in polices and practices of the organization and the orientation/onboarding process. Through my experience, paring up a new hire with a leader/mentor who displays the expected culture in the workplace can be super beneficial to a group of new hires. This mentor will be able to provide the new hires with the guidance and attitude needed at the organization which can infect other new hires in the weeks to come. Regarding the orientation and onboarding process, leaders have the best opportunity to emphasize the importance of the company’s vision, mission and value statement which will embody the importance of the expected culture at the organization. Lastly, I would like to speak about leadership communication. In my experience working for big organizations, I’ve been a part of stand-up meetings at the start of shift where leaders would regularly communicate expected goals, values and culture need at the company. In doing so the leaders were able to ensure that employees were reminded of the importance of the organizational culture. All this ties into how leaders should teach new hires the expected culture at their organization.
