Organizational Structure Bermeo 2 Organizational Structure To simply answer the question of why elements of structure tend to change together is because they are interrelated and impact each other. Among these elements work specialization has the biggest importance as it requires adaptability, which today is important as business must be able to respond to changing conditions and attitudes. By adopting a structure that is flexible, work processes, resource allocation and decision making can all be affected for a better outcome for the organization. Question #1 Going back to the question of why these five elements of structure tend to change together, I must first explain how they correspond to one another. In our textbook work specialization has been defined as “the degree to which activities in the organization are divided, and then subdivided, into separate jobs” (Organizational Behavior and Human Relations, What is Organizational Structure, 2021, para. 4). As workplaces across the nation gradually expand their division of labor into smaller and more specialized components, adjustments in other structural elements must also change. The specific element that will require change would be formalization. Formalization is described as “the degree to which jobs withing the organization are standardized” … “An employee in a highly formalized job has little input as to how that job is done” (Organizational Behavior and Human Relations, What is Organizational Structure, 2021, para. 26). As changes to work specialization occur, formalization also changes as the organization must ensure control and coordination within the newly made positions. Job descriptions must be changed and created for old and new positions. This process will ensure clarity and consistency within new and old tasks. As new positions are created this will also affect the element, span of control throughout these new tasks. The element of span of control is
Organizational Structure Bermeo 3 defined as “the number of subordinates a manager can effectively direct” (Organizational Behavior and Human Relations, What is Organizational Structure, 2021, para. 19). As positions become more specialized, it will require a narrower span of control to maintain coordination in the workplace. However, this can also affect the organizational hierarchy which will lead to decentralization in the chain of command. This connects to the next element of structure, chain of command which is described as “the unbroken line of authority that extends from the top of the organization to the lowest echelon and clarifies who reports to whom” (Organizational Behavior and Human Relations, What is Organizational Structure, 2021, para. 16). The previously spoken elements all take part in the necessity to adjust the chain of command to ensure that associate is made clear as to who they need to report. As adjustments are made to the chain of command, it will affect centralization and formalization. Lastly centralization refers to “the degree to which decision making is concentrated at a single point in the organization” (Organizational Behavior and Human Relations, What is Organizational Structure, 2021, para. 23). As changes are being made in the organization, chain of command and span of control are both affected by change in the element of centralization. Question #2 Through my own experience in the organizations I have been a part of, I must say the ability to adapt to its environment is more critical for an organization in today’s world. Businesses today are rapidly changing due to industry objectives and competitiveness across the board. As vital as efficiency is for optimizing results, it is not as important today as we live in an evolving environment where factors such as market shifts and technological advancements are occurring. More importantly business had to adapt quickly during the pandemic. An organization that has an adaptable environment will be able to respond quicker to changes in their

Organizational Structure Bermeo 4 environment, allowing for better opportunities as compared to their competitors who are behind the new change. This organization will be able to quickly involve changes to strategies, structures, innovations, and learning curves. For example, an organization that adopts the Matrix structure will be able to efficiently allocate specialists in areas that require more assistance. In addition, information will be exchanged quicker as compared to a more bureaucratic structure. In the end it is important for an organization to adopt a structure that supports both an efficient but also adaptable environment for the purpose of having a more stable and flexible organization. Question #3 The organizational form that I believe leads to the highest levels of motivation among workers is the holarchy concept. This concept is referred to as “a method of decentralized management and organizational governance in which decision making and authority are distributed among self-organizing teams” (Organizational Behavior and Human Relations, Modern Organizational Design, 2021, para. 23). As mentioned in the YouTube video titled “Holacracy by Brian Robertson – BOOK SUMMARY” by Snackable Idea “Employees like it because they feel truly empowered to act on tensions, problems and opportunities that they recognize” (Snackable Ideas, Holacracy by Brian Robertson – BOOK SUMMARY, 2015). I really like how the author of the video includes that as it shows how employees feel more motivated to work in this organizational structure, which further proves my reasoning behind why the holarchy concert leads to a higher level of motivation.
