How might you support and mentor a staff member who was struggling to meet the expectations of the job? Teaching can be extremely challenging at times, but if you really care about your students and have their best interest in mind you can overcome struggles. Although teaching can be very draining, it can also be very rewarding. According to (Gadzikowski 2013), “Employees in early childhood programs need goals to direct their professional growth.” Administrators work with staff members to create and review goals on a regular basis, usually as part of an annual or semi-annual evaluation or if there is an impression that a teacher is struggling with an issue such as time management or handling misbehavior from a student that disrupts class. I would schedule face-to -face meetings with my teacher to assist with a 4-week plan to help support, mentor, and guide. of job performance.” As an administrator at the school, I’ve come to realize or have the mandated test scores were accurately low, or the teacher’s recent evaluation was poor due to FOUR WEEK PLAN: Week 1 Schedule a face-to-face meeting. - Ask how they are doing, there could be factors that are driving the struggles. - Discuss strengths and weaknesses. - Find out what areas they are struggling. - Develop strategies to help time management and how to deal with students that disrupt class. - Set short- and long-term goals. Week 2 Implement strategies that were discussed during the face-to-face meeting we had during week one. Start working on short term goals, I will do a quick check-in with the teacher mid-week to offer support and mentorship. Week 3 Schedule a second face-to-face meeting towards the end of the week. - Discuss how they are feeling? - Did the strategies help? - Make any adjustments early on to ensure the strategies are effective. - Develop a strong support system. Week 4 During this week we will have a debrief of the 4 week plan to determine if strategies and goals are leading to success in the classroom. PREDETERMINED QUESTIONS: 1) How do you feel at the end of the 4 week plan? 2) Do you feel like you continue to feel the same struggles you did prior to the 4 week plan? 3) Do you still see areas of improvement? What areas?
4) Do you feel like you can initiate this plan on your own if you find other areas of improvement. 5) Do you feel like you have a good support system at this school? 6) What can I do to help you be successful in your classroom? END GOAL: The end goal is to support the struggling teacher and to guide them to meet expectations. Create a plan to implement that will set them up for success and give them the tools that they need to be able to work on their struggles in the future. Develop a strong support system, so they feel as though they don’t have to face these struggles alone and they feel comfortable reaching out for help. The goal is for teachers to identify and work on areas of improvement. Resources: Davis, Matt. 10 May 2013. Resources Toolkit for New Teachers. Edutopia.
