Discussion Thread: Research-Based Practices and Decision Making As a teacher in special education, share how you and/or the administration at your organization (or desired professional role upon completing your doctorate) use research to inform your decision-making process. Are evidence-based practices encouraged? If so, how? Do you think this is effective? Why or why not? What are the challenges teachers and administrators face with ensuring they are utilizing evidence-based best practices in the classroom? What recommendations do you have (based on research or observation in your professional setting) for educators to help close the perennial research-to-practice gap in the field of education? t the school I work at, they do encourage to used research-based techniques when working on IEP goals with students and when we are documenting on IEP goals. They encourage to us to use different techniques when teaching material like using visual aids and manipulatives to help students understand the material better. When I’m working with students on their IEP goals, I try to get a baseline on what they are and how they learn to tailor my lessons to get the best data. In the classroom, it is important to create an environment that allows students to learn in the best possible way and using research-based strategies has been proven to improve student learning. (Borrego, Cutler, Froyd, Prince , & Henderson, 2011) These techniques are encouraged because it helps us gather data on student progress and helps us show progress for IEP goals so objectives can be reached in a timely manner. Some of the struggles that I have seen with using these strategies is not making the time or making the little adjustments that are needed to help students learn. Most of the time, I see teachers stuck in their ways and not willing to budge on trying these strategies. There has also been the issue has been that the student doesn’t want any intervention or is not willing to change. What I would recommend is teachers make the time to learn about these strategies through workshops or independent research and make the time to incorporate those strategies into their classroom. It’s our job as educators to make sure every child successfully has the best access to a free education. Also giving kids a chance to do things on there own and not giving them the answers all the time. We are there to teach a skill and follow up with the students on retaining that skill.
