Aris Toteles M Wanimbo MGMT 2500 – Study Case 4 Discussion Questions 1. Which perspective of leadership best explains the problems experienced in this case? Analyze the case using concepts discussed in that leadership perspective. In this case the leader Peter Lars uses the perspective of transformational leadership and the perspective of competence. His jobs show that he is the innovator in this company. He has made many changes in his works. For example, one of the biggest changes is he stopped the old employees because he thought the employees are not maximal to do the newer innovation and hired new workers. In addition, to achieve his goal for the company and as a leader who has a strong influence, he also hired two executives from Europe to lead the company. His reason is to cut the workforce in the company.   The most visible of Peter's leadership in his organization is the transformational leadership theory where in this case Peter is drawn as a persuasive leader and always builds trust. This theory is focused on making a better future in the company. As an example, Peter always has confidence, assertiveness, and a pleasant and highly persuasive interpersonal style in the workplace. As a result, his presence is always there and attracts other’s attention and makes employees respect his leadership. When compared to charismatic leadership, transformational leadership involves people with persuasive and trust-building behaviors. In terms of competency perspective, he is a knowledgeable leader because he has experience of having another high position or CEO in a European telephone firm for six years and led the other famous cell phone company from the US. It shows that Peter has a strong business
knowledge to lead Profitel. Moreover, he also practices drive and integrity concepts such as he did invest heavily in the latest wireless broadband technology (for both cell phones and computer internet) ahead of competitors, lower costs through layoffs and eliminating additional services, and put pressure on governments to deregulate existing and new companies. It is drawn that he uses competency perspective when he puts actions in his leadership. Peter's approach is aimed at increasing Profitel's profit margins and pleasing the board in terms of the skills he has done. On the other hand, Peter is a very arrogant leader in the eyes of customers and his staff because he is very brave in making decisions within the company and does not consider the opinions of his staff. Although this was aimed at growing his company, it sparked negative statements in his work environment, for example, Peters' strong opposition to government restrictions had unforeseen consequences. Instead of getting what they want, this causes Profitel to appear more arrogant in the eyes of customers and government officials. 2. What can organizations do to minimize the leadership problem discussed above? In my opinion, the company will have a better organizational structure if they change the leader's perspective from the transformational leadership and the competence perspectives to the transformational leadership and managerial perspectives. It is because transformational and managerial perspectives are the best perspectives to apply in this company.   Perspective can make all staff in the company participate to make the company successful. I believe that a company will be successful when people in the company can work together and make decisions from a discussion not only the decision from the leader.   Furthermore, an advanced company is focused to make all employees enjoyed and welfare the workers.
