-- Ch 1: Discussion (1) Why do you think there is a trend toward greater democracy and decentralization in organizations today?   Would a radical decentralized system be effective with Gen Z employees?   Why? Because there has been a drastic change in the workforce and the way that things are done in the workforce. A radical decentralized system would be effective with Gen Z employees because it coincides with their work ethic and how they operate, with their communication, ideas, and ideas to success. Ch 1: Discussion (2) Think about the highly publicized safety ground of Boeing 737 MAX jetliner.  One observer said that the goal of profit had taken precedence over the goal of safety within the company. Do you think managers can succeed at both profit and safety simultaneously?  Discuss. Yes, I think that managers can be both profitable and safety simultaneously, because if you put your workers in front of actual profits and use their safety then they’re going to go above and beyond and work their butts off for you. If you’re going to disregard them and their safety, mistakes are going to be made and they aren’t going to be as willing to be helpful/go above and beyond for the company. Ch 1: Discussion (3) You are a bright, hard-working, entry-level manager who fully intends to rise through the ranks.  Your performance evaluation gives you high marks for your technical skills, but low marks when it comes to people skills.  Do you think people skills can be learned, or do you need to rethink your career path?  If people skills can be learned, how would you go about that? I think that anything that can be learned as far as people skills I think that it comes easier to those that already have it but can be something learned. You just must try a little harder and “fake it until you make it” kind of thing. Just try by practicing with someone and just go back and forth, practice makes perfect. You need to make sure that you keep consistency and that usually works. Ch 2: Discussion (1)
Do you think it is wise for a top executive to fire a manager who is bringing in big sales and profits for the company but not living up the cultural value of "showing respect for employees"?  Explain. Yes, because if you don’t show respect to your employees then why would people want to work for you or under you? Even if the manager is bringing in big sales/profits they will run off the potential employees that could have those kind of profits/sales. A toxic work environment isn’t good for anyone, so removal of that would be ideal. Ch 2: Discussion (2) Surveys reveal shifts in social attitude among younger people related to issues such as same- sex marriage and citizenship for people who are undocumented. How do you think these changing attitudes might affect manager's job over the next few years? I don’t think that it should bother anyone really, same-sex marriages and people that are undocumented that doesn’t have anything to do with how well he/she/they do their jobs, if a person does their job well and effectively, it shouldn’t matter what their background/at home choices are. Ch 2: Discussion (3) Pick two industries and identify issues that have the potential to create environmental uncertainty (Examples:  automobile, newspaper, medical services, etc) Medical Services – another pandemic would cause potential environmental uncertainty because when covid or something hits the world is thrown into chaos and there really isn’t much that people know about what to do or what to expect. Automobile – because if we do eventually convert to electrical cars who’s to say what mechanics still have/don’t have a job. Those that aren’t versed in electrical cars will lose their jobs and that could be uncertainty in many different levels. Ch 3: Discussion (1) If you were to interview someone for a position as an international business executive, what are three questions you think it would be important to ask?  Explain your reasoning.

What are their plans for the company? What do they know about the company already? What do they intend to bring to the company? Each of these questions brings out what is expected and known for the company and to see where it is eventually going to lead. What kind of improvements are needed from a different perspective. Ch 3: Discussion (2) Do you think individuals can develop a global mind-set if they never live outside their native country?  Explain. Yes, because you’ve never left a country doesn’t mean that they can’t have a global mind set, if they have the willingness to learn about other cultures then they are more than able to develop a global mind set. Ch 3: Discussion (3) Two U.S. companies are competing to take over a large factory in the Czech Republic.  One delegation tours the facility and asks questions about how the plant might be run more efficiently.  The other delegation focuses on ways to improve working conditions and produce a better product.   Which delegation do you think is more likely to succeed operating in the plant?  Why?  What information would you want to collect to decide whether to acquire the plant for your company? The improvement for better working conditions and produce a better product, because they are looking out for the people that are making the products and are making the conditions that they work in better. If you work somewhere where they care about your wellbeing, you’ll go above and beyond for that company. You’ll make sure that ends meet, because they care about you and the work environment that they have you in. I’d like to know the profit margins, the management scales, what they intend to do etc.
