Erika Manche Strategic Management 479 Professor Morris August 6, 2023 Erika – Your case study is good. The primary issue is that you should cite within the body of the paper. See my comments below. Good job. Mike Case Study 1 Apple Inc. S.W.O.T Analysis Strengths: Strong brand recognition. Apple is one of the most recognized brand globally. Apple has sold over a billion iPhones, making it the most successful product innovation to date. Quality products with unique features to that of competitor s such as apple pay and Siri. Apple allows their customer to link all of their products together on one platform and allows for maximum efficiency. Innovative and among the best technological advantages in the industry. Profitability and financial strength. Apple Inc has reached the highest profitability of any other American technological company. Apple made 60 billion in net profits in 2019 and has shown significant stock appreciation since 2010. Weaknesses: Expensive products not accessible to some consumers, Apple has a high price point for their products as compared to their competitors. The iPhone, Macs, and iPad have a higher price point than other products one the market with similar features.
Erika Manche Strategic Management 479 Professor Morris August 6, 2023 Apple has a high litigation degree. The company experiences frequent legal battles with other tech companies over matters of trademarks and patents. This creates a lot of costs for the corporation. In recent years, Apple has become rather complacent in the market. They have not released many new products, while brands such as Samsung have released a high amount of similar products which is taking up a higher percentage of the market share than in previous years. Apple has not come out with major product innovation since the iPhone was released in 2007. The iPhone accounts for 50-70% of Apple’s net profits. Low level of customization for users. Apples devices come pre-loaded with features, and the user does not have many choices to use advanced options. Opportunities: Apple employs the use of artificial intelligence. Apple created its own platform of AI with Siri. Apple comes up with the newest innovative technologies before its competitors. It stays ahead of other companies such as Google with new technologies. In recent years, Apple has focused on streaming services to compete with companies such as Netflix and Amazon with AppleTV, Apple Music, and Apple podcasts. Threats: Ongoing battles with counterfeit products. Other companies have copied Apple’s technology using cheaper products that can be sold at a lower price point. Knockoff items can be found from countless companies online.
Erika Manche Strategic Management 479 Professor Morris August 6, 2023 Competition is probably Apple’s largest threat. There is a huge emerging competition with other companies who make similar products, such as Amazon and Samsung. In recent years, Apple has been affected by high inflation rates. They have seen a large reduction in sales after 2015. Consumers do not have as much money to spend on new technologies as they have in the past. PESTEL Analysis Political Factors Apple is one of the highest grossing technology companies in the U.S. Apple’s high amount of sales accounts for higher corporation taxation, where income inequality has become a main political issue. Apple is reliant on China for their manufacturing, which is much cheaper than it would be if they were in the Unites States. A growing number of consumers are willing to spend more for American made products. Apple could be the target of political issues in other countries because of their associations with the country. Apples popularity in China has declined in recent years due to more competition and trade tensions, which had formerly made of 25% of its sales. Economic factors Increased labor prices in China could affect Apple’s cost advantage. The recent recession has had an impact on the company, as consumers do not have as much disposable income.

Erika Manche Strategic Management 479 Professor Morris August 6, 2023 Social Factors Younger generations that will make up a large portion of consumers do not have as much brand loyalty to Apple. Apple’s association with China is offensive to some consumers who wish to support American made products. Consumers are shying away from flashy and expensive products and create backlash. Technological Factors Other companies such as Samsung and Google have shown their ability to create the same technology as Apple with a cheaper price tag. The number of new products created by Apple has declined in recent years. Apples operating system could limit the amount of applications available to users. The growing capabilities of cyber criminals provides less security to consumers. Environmental factors The biggest environmental factor that Apple faces is the disposal of its devices. Regulations are changing in other countries related to greenhouse emissions, creating higher manufacturing costs. Increased regulations and costs for regulations will directly effect costs of production. Legal Factors
Erika Manche Strategic Management 479 Professor Morris August 6, 2023 Some new technology released by Apple, such as Apple pay, had forced them to join the highly regulated financial sector. This will cause an increase in the amount of regulations for the company. This will also increase the amount of litigation. Apple provides products and services that involve intellectual property laws such as music, which can cause them to be in litigation and piracy issues. Resources Brand name recognition Employees Management team Patents Capabilities Technological department General administration Product design Research and development Marketing Retailing management Core Competencies Artificial intelligence capabilities Systems to allow for rapid innovations Globally recognized brand
Erika Manche Strategic Management 479 Professor Morris August 6, 2023 Global distribution and sales Large variety of complimentary products Findings of Facts Management After Steve Jobs stepped down as Apples CEO, Tim Cook was given the position. He has successfully led the company in the right direction from a financial standpoint. He has directed outsourcing of products and saved the company 2% a week. Marketing Apple recognizes the challenges ahead of them as far as where the company’s growth will come from. Apple realized that they need to focus on futures sales from countries such as India. They realize that they are competing with China in these new emerging markets. Tim Cook states that he has strategies for how Apple will move forward to compete in these new markets. Finance Apples Stock appreciation has steadily and significantly increased since 2009. Apples sales have slightly decreased after 2015, undoubtedly due to the increase in competition with other company’s new smart phones such as Samsung. Accounting From reviewing Apples financial Data table, it is clear that although sales have gone down, the company is still very financially successful. Some categories, such as debt have increased, but so have sales and assets.
