Kumar (2009) briefly explains the five dysfunctions of a team introduced by Lencioni in 2002. Choose one of the five dysfunctions and explain the dysfunction in detail. How does this one area erode the entire team? According to the book, the five dysfunctions are: 1- Absence of trust: hesitant to expose oneself to danger in the group. 2- Fear of conflict: preferring manufactured peace to fruitful, heated discussion. 3- Lack of commitment: fake support for group choices spreads uncertainty throughout the company. 4- Avoidance of accountability: avoiding the need to confront superiors and peers about unproductive behavior that lowers standards. 5- Inattention to team results: placing individual achievement, status, and ego over group accomplishment. Absence of trust is a serious issue because lack of trust affects a team's capacity for productive collaboration, effective communication, innovation, and upholding a positive team culture. Team leaders need to focus on developing trust in order to overcome this dysfunction. They can do this by encouraging honesty, vulnerability, and a secure space where members can express themselves without worrying about criticism or retaliation.
