In my previous career, I was a restaurant manager for a small restaurant group. Most of my experience to this point had been managing one location, but I had recently been promoted to oversee both locations. I loved my job and had been working towards this position since I had started. I loved training and development and this position gave me the opportunity to advance those skills. During the pandemic, we were short staffed and struggling to stay open seven days a week. We were short a second manager at each location and I had to shift into a day-to-day role, down from my current position. With only two other managers and myself working at two locations, we never saw each other face-to-face. Standards were starting to slip and I was determined to keep morale and standards up, however I had difficulty connecting with the managers on the other shifts. I had the brilliant idea to continue our manager training through a series of bulletins, or otherwise lengthy emails to my managers. I was re- writing our training guide at the time and my emails to my managers transformed into prolonged instructional guides to stay in touch. I thought it was great and spent a lot of time and thought into my writing. But they never responded, or probably even read any of the emails. I learned my lesson in email etiquette. We are too busy and too flooded with messages for employees to be enthusiastic to read a really long email from their boss. In addition, the lack of face-to-face communication left things up to interpretation and I was not considering how my message was going to be received from their perspective. I since have learned the value of different methods of communication for different settings and have become a much better (and more well liked) manager.
