The most important part of being a leader is setting a good example. It is no good telling people what to do and how to act, if you are not going to hold yourself to the same standards. Question 9: List 2 ways you can act to send a positive message to your team as a leader: 1. Recognition can take many forms, from an informal pat on the back 2. Reward staff with formal or informal praise, such as verbal praise, awards, written reports to more senior managers Question 10: What is a manager’s role in achieving company goals? As a manager you will need to foster a team environment to improve the success of your business. A key to creating a team environment is recognising both team and individual contributions to achieving the goals of the group. Focusing an individual's goals on a team-oriented service standard can help to achieve the goals. As a leader and manager you will spend most of your time dealing with people. Operational issues will always be important but as your responsibilities increase you will find that people issues take up more and more of your time. This requires you to become adept at solving the operational issues as efficiently as possible, while at the same time you will need to acquire the necessary people management skills so you can perform all aspects of the required job. To do this you must always show your staff that you support the business goals and are working hard to achieve them. If a manager or supervisor complains about targets or goals the business has set, this will have a negative effect on the team. Question 12: List 2 reasons why treating people with integrity, respect and empathy will help you manage your team. 1. Employees are more engaged and productive; they are less stressed and more apt to apply themselves diligently to their work 2. Prevent conflict from incurring due to lack of integrity, respect and empathy. Question 13: If you don’t treat people with respect (for example use fear and threats) this can have a negative effect on your team. List 2 examples of how lack of respect can negatively impact on a team: 1. Using fear creates a mindset of needing to get the job done to avoid repercussions. In the short-term, employees may use this fear of repercussion to do their jobs to the minimum standards, but you can be assured that if there is any opportunity for them to leave, or sabotage you, they will take it. 2. Continual use of threats without any follow-up action, will eventually result in the employees not caring about the threats, because they are meaningless. It also means that most of your time is taken up with checking whether staff have done their jobs. All you achieve is a high stress level for everyone involved. Some managers use staff incentive initiatives to motivate and reward staff, these may include vouchers, time off, food and drink offers. 2.
