Discussion: Engage with fellow students with a discussion on Project Management Scheduling. This week the discussion is around the importance of project scheduling and to assist in the development of the WBS that was started last week. Explain the major components of the project schedule and some of the major aspects to include in the WBS. Please find an additional source and cite to source in your discussion. By citing a source, you are enhancing the learning experience by searching for additional information on the topic. Please ensure you are using a source that is peer-reviewed to ensure accuracy of information (select peer-reviewed journal articles in the Park Library). Response: Project scheduling is important because it allows the project manager to develop a timeline for the project and identify milestones. The project schedule also provides a roadmap for the project team and helps ensure the project is completed on time and within budget. The project schedule is essential because it lays out a course of action for the project team to follow and contributes to ensuring that the project will be finished on time and without exceeding its allocated budget. Additionally, the timetable enables the project manager to recognize milestones and monitor progress. The work breakdown structure (WBS) is a tool that may be used to build the schedule for the project. The Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) is a hierarchical deconstruction of the project into smaller tasks that are easier to manage. Creating a timetable for the project can be accomplished with the help of the WBS by determining the tasks that need to be finished, calculating the amount of time required to complete each work, and allocating resources to each activity. A project schedule is crucial because it identifies the resources needed to complete tasks. Thus, a project manager can work with resource managers to ensure resources are available when needed. MAJOR COMPONENTS OF PROJECT SCHEDULING Tasks / Activities: The project schedule starts with a thorough description of all the tasks and activities needed to finish the project. The activities that make up the schedule's foundation should be precise, quantifiable, and doable. Task/Activity Durations: The project schedule lists the projected durations for each job, letting you know how long it will take to finish each one. Task dependencies : These factors outline the connections between various tasks. They specify which tasks must be finished before beginning others. Resource Allocation: By ensuring that the resources are allocated appropriately, bottlenecks and delays are avoided. Deadlines and limitations : External rules or financial restrictions are examples of limitations that limit scheduling flexibility. Project deadlines are also included in the timetable, which is important for time-sensitive tasks.
Milestones: These are essential occurrences or accomplishments in a project that frequently signal the end of a phase or a crucial job. They give a sense of success and assist in tracking development. Critical path: this is the set of tasks that, if completed in the wrong order, would push back the project's total completion date. It aids in determining which project components are most time-sensitive. MAJOR ASPECTS TO INCLUDE IN WBS Phases of the Project: Break the project up into separate phases, such as planning, design, implementation, testing, and closure. The WBS uses each phase as a high- level category. Deliverables: are the outputs that must be achieved and should be broken down into several categories for each project phase. Stakeholders anticipate these results from the initiative. Subtasks: Break down the job into further subtasks or work packages for each deliverable. These subtasks have to be precise, controllable, and delegatable to team members. Hierarchy : Using a hierarchy, arrange the WBS components so that the higher levels correspond to the project's more general components and the lower levels to its more specific breakdowns. Responsibilitie s: Assigning duties to particular team members or positions will ensure responsibility for each work bundle or subtask. Dependencies: Task dependencies are included in the project schedule. However, the WBS should capture the logical order of work inside each branch of the hierarchy to ensure that the relationships between tasks are well understood.
The WBS is a valuable tool because it enables the project manager to divide the project into more manageable subtasks, which in turn makes it simpler to keep tabs on progress and manage the project overall. The project manager will be able to assure that all of the tasks will be finished on time and that the project will be completed without exceeding the budget if they create a WBS. The WBS is also a helpful instrument for detecting potential risks and issues that may arise. The project manager will be able to take action to avoid or reduce the risks if they are identified early on in the process.. Project scheduling holds a crucial role in the realm of project management, serving as a fundamental tool for ensuring project success. Project scheduling acts as a centralized repository, gathering all pertinent project-related information into a single platform. This data consolidation fosters seamless communication and collaboration between project managers and stakeholders, eliminating misunderstandings and promoting effective coordination. When everyone involved in the project has access to the same information, it becomes easier to make informed decisions and maintain alignment throughout the project's lifecycle. One of the key advantages of project scheduling lies in its ability to facilitate task prioritization. This process begins with developing a work breakdown structure, breaking the project into manageable, discrete tasks. Subsequently, project managers can utilize various techniques to assess task criticality and establish their order of precedence. This systematic approach ensures a clear project timeline and aids in resource allocation, as managers can allocate resources based on the priority and dependencies of tasks. Furthermore, project scheduling provides detailed task descriptions and skill requirements, simplifying the resource selection and allocation process and offering real-time progress tracking, allowing for continuous monitoring and proactive resource management. Overall, project scheduling is indispensable in the project manager's toolkit, promoting efficient project execution and successful outcomes. Globerson, S., Cohen, I., & Vardi, S. (2016).
