2 The internet has transformed the way people live, work, and communicate. It has become and integral part of daily lives, and provides countless opportunities for learning, entertainment, and socially. How ever with these newfound opportunities comes a corresponding rise in the threats posed by online predators and cyberbullying that can have serious consequences if the proper precautions are not taken a in this era of online usage, it is imperative that individuals, especially young students, are equipped with the knowledge and skills to protect themselves online. One such solution is to include online etiquette and safety class into the teaching curriculum. My proposal advocates for the inclusion of safety classes on how to protect themselves online into the school systems while keeping the burden on the education system to the minimum. As technology advances, the risks involved with the online space increases, according to studies 93% of adults in the United States use the internet regularly (Pew Research, 2021), and since September of 2021 96% of public school provided digital device to support online learning (Dept of education, 2021). These opportunities are afforded so that students can continue and improve their education, even when unable to attend school. With such a high usage it is essential that people can navigate the online work safely and responsibly. For example, one such risk young students can face on the online spectrum is cyber-bullying which is an exclusive form of bullying that happens online. Cyber-bullying can have severe psychological and emotional consequences. A study in 2017 found that cyberbullying was strongly associated with an increased risk of depression among students (JAMA Paediatrics, 2017). Another risk students can have been exposure to age-inappropriate content. With all the different types of media out there it has never been easier to accesses content that you may not be mature enough to handle. Exposure to this content can have a negative effect on young minds outlooks and can cause spiralling problems later in life (JAMA Paediatrics, 2017). Finally, a major risk that increased
3 with the increase of online work is cyber-crimes against children. According to the FBI internet crimes center against K-12 school kids age have increased by 83%. These reasons and more highlight the importance of educating people on how to protect themselves. Some may say that this education does not work, but several countries, such as the United Kingdom and Australia, have already incorporated online safety education into their school curriculum (Unicef,2022). These international examples demonstrate the feasibility and the benefits of such an approach. Along with numerous studies that have demonstrated the effectiveness of online education programs. For example, a study published in the journal “Computers & Education” in 2020 found that students who had received online safety education were more likely to exhibit safe online behaviours. Leading experts in the field of cybersecurity and online safety, such as National cyber security and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, have also advocated for including online safety classes into the classroom (Global risk report,2021). With so much support for this why is this not already part of our education system you may ask. One such challenge for implementing this into our education system is funding Teacher training. To properly educate students the Teachers need training and school systems can claim that the funding is not available to incorporate this into their already stranded budget. To overcome this obstacle, I propose that school boards utilize free courses provided by Organization like UNICEF or the American federation of teachers. This training can be implemented during Teacher in service days to not take away from the school year and keeps cost to a minimum. Another counter argument is that the school system already doesn’t have enough time to teach the required classes how would safety classes be implemented to the bloated schedule. To overcome this the school system can have online class start at a young age and always be building on this. A Seminar at the start of a semester before each class start its curriculum to build on the lessons the students have learned from kindergarten to 12 th

4 grade would help keep students safe and not put to much of a strain on the time standards of class work. These Safety classes should cover a wide range of topics from recognizing the signs of cyberbullying and harassment, protecting personal information and harassment, and understanding the risks associated with social media and online presence. In conclusion as the internet becomes more and more of an integral role in our lives the threats from the internet are real, and online education is not just an elective but a necessity. By including this class into the curriculum, we can empower our students to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly. By addressing this issue that the future generations are face and applying the solution of incorporating online safety and etiquette into the current curriculum will pay dividend for long term well-being of those to come. It is time for schools, parents, policymakers, and society to recognize the need we have for online safety. The evidence is clear by not addressing this issue we can be contributing to cyber- crimes as a whole and we can mitigate this risk by something as simple as educating the future.
