1 UNIT 3 Assignment Kevin Weaver Purdue University Global MT297 Capstone Professor Young January 23, 2024
2 Unit 3 Assignment Being Team leader has many different roles a person must play everything from understanding the task at hand to deciding the best course of action. As team leader of a 5- person team it is important that the task of addressing a new initiative within the company. The deadline for this is 4 months and the team has struggled in the first two weeks of project development due to the personal conflict between 2 members. This conflict stems from being very competitive with each other throughout their work history and has been well documented between two organizations. To help negotiate a conflict resolution the three P’s of conflict resolution will be applied. The First of which is people, this step is about identifying who is part of the conflict as to ensure the right resource and advice are being applied. For this situation the People are 2 team members (Zofi, 2012). Next step is the process where the historical patterns are identified since conflicts always have causes based on past actions (Zofi 2012). These two employees’ conflict stems from their competitive nature with each other. Finally, the last step which is the problem, or what is the source of the issue (Zofi, 2012). Following identifying the three P’s a method of conflict management needs to be applied to mitigate the conflict. This conflict most likely is a performance conflict or conflicts that occur with the how and who of how tasks are accomplished (Zofi, 2012). To mitigate this situation the two team members and the team leader will have an open discussion to identify what the end results of this competitive nature is. For example, if this is a desire for personal growth I would that success as a team is more important for career growth than failing the task and individually ahead. If the conflict is based on a desire to push themselves as individuals, I would stress that while this is important for intervention
3 if their competition is setting the team as a whole back it needs to be better directed. This all plays into building a better team and accomplishing the task at hand. Team development can also help mitigate conflict as a well-oiled team operates better the one is disarray. The first step is set up or where you plan for the team and set the purpose, vision, mission, goals, and results for them. Next is Follow through or whereas team leaders you check up that your team is following the norms created in the first step (Zofi, 2012). This can be done by opening communication, accountability, managing conflict, and project management. The final step is refreshing where periodic checks happen, morale and energy are assessed, and wrapping up. The prosses would follow a three-way meeting between involved members and the team leader. This conversation will open with the team leader reviewing the task at hand, the deadline, and current delays. Next the root of the delays will be identified to the members along with the documentation of their previous infractions to properly identify the issue. By better understanding what is driving the two individuals as to what drives them to success hopefully a compromise is reached on methods and how team success is important for career success. The hoped for results is that the team members will be able to set aside their differences and use that drive to ensure the deadline of 4 months is met. This result would mean that both parties are able to better understand one another and use that competitive nature to better the team and provide the required deliverables for the company and drive forward their careers. For the team leader it shows higher echelons that they can effectively manage a team and meet set goals. In conclusion conflict resolution is a necessary skill needed to properly manage a team and meet set tasks and goals.
