Question 11

SHORT ESSAY:

or two paragraphs (8 points).
OPTION 1:
How did Isaac Newton and John Locke in±uence Jonathan Edwards?
Answer in a brief essay of one or two paragraphs.
OPTION 2:

with idealism and realism respectively, how did Jonathan Edwards synthesize
Christianity with Enlightenment ideas?
OPTION 3:
Paraphrase the main tenets of Scottish Common Sense Realism, and
explain their contribution to American politics, religion, and education.
OPTION 2:
Similar to how Augustine and Aquinas synthesized Christian thought
with idealism and realism respectively, how did Jonathan Edwards synthesize
Christianity with Enlightenment ideas?
Jonathan Edwards, a key ²gure in 18th-century American theology, tried to blend
Christianity with Enlightenment ideas. Back then, the Enlightenment valued reason
and science, which sometimes clashed with religious views. Edwards worked on
making these two things ²t together. He argued that it's okay to use reason to
understand religious truths, saying that God gave us brains for a reason. Edwards
also wrestled with the idea of whether we have control over our choices or if God is
the one really in charge, trying to ²nd a middle ground. His writings, like "Freedom
of the Will," show how he tried to connect his Christian beliefs with the new ideas
of the Enlightenment, bridging the gap between faith and reason in a changing
intellectual landscape.
