HIS 100 Module Three Activity Template: Historical Context
Replace the bracketed text below with your responses.
Identify the topic you chose to explore:
Tulsa Massacre
Describe the historical context surrounding your historical event.
The historical context surrounding my historical event is that the Tulsa Massacre took place on
June 1, 1921, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. On that day a large group of White community members
decided to riot at a courthouse where this riot soon turned into a mob where White members
were fighting Black community members. There were shootings, vandalism, soldiers, snipers’
arson, and looting done by the White part of the community in order to destroy Greenwood,
the Black community.
Describe a key historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event.
The group’s participation in this event involved the White community members of Tulsa,
Oklahoma where they destroyed and burnt down Greenwood, one of the most successful
Black communities in America. During 1921, African American’s still did not have all the rights
as did a White man. Black communities were segregated from Whites, as were many other
aspects including, education, bathrooms, jobs, etc.
Explain the key historical figure or group’s motivation to participate in your historical event.
The groups motivation to participate in the Tulsa Massacre stemmed from a newspaper
hearing of an African American man, Dick Rowland, allegedly assaulting a White woman,
Sarah Page, in an elevator as he was going up to use the restroom. There were no witnesses
around to see the alleged assault and police did not arrest Rowland as they did not believe
Page’s statement. The newspapers soon got ahead of this story and decided to publish it even
though there were no arrests or accusations. Once the public got ahold of this rumor, White
civilians started a riot.
Articulate how the historical context caused or influenced your chosen historical event.
This historical context influenced my historical event as African Americans at this time of the
event still did not have the same privileges as White civilians. At this time both Whites and
African Americans were segregated and were often not seen together as they had their own
communities. Due to this, I believe the motivation of the event stemmed from the segregation
of the two races, and due to the segregation and differences in rights, this was the main
influence of the Tulsa Massacre.
Explain how connecting your historical event and current event improves the understanding of
your topic.
I think that connecting my historical event and my current event could improve the
understanding of my topic by having a further understanding on how this historical event
could have potentially influenced my current event. During the time of the historical event,
African American’s faced many differences compared to White’s. In the recent times of my
chosen current event, African American’s are still facing racial discrimination and hate crimes.
My historical event can give me a better understanding as to why African American’s are still
not being treated equally even after 100 years later and how we can improve on stopping the
amount of discrimination still happening in today’s society.
