Chapter 19 Questions
1.
Explain the role of the United States in the global economy by 1920.
The role of the United States in the global economy by 1920 was enforcing the free flow
of trade, spreading freedom, and promoting the American society. By 1920, the United
States was the top producing nation for manufactured goods, producing more than one
third of the worlds manufactured goods. American made products were flooding other
countries markets during this time. Countries like Britain, Germany, and France were
relying on the United States exported goods not just for food, but for weapons as well.
3.
What did President Wilson mean by “moral imperialism”, and what measures were
taken to apply this to Latin America?
Moral imperialism was the idea of Americans spreading American culture through
economic influence by selling manufactured goods to surrounding countries. Wilson
believed this would then influence the people of the surrounding countries to want to
live the “American way.” Wilson was set on giving the United States the responsibility to
teach others the lessons of democracy. He did so by having United States troops
stationed in Latin America countries for military intervention to enforce this.
4.
How did the ratification of the eighteenth and nineteenth amendments show the
restrictive and democratizing nature of Progressivism?
The 18
th
amendment prohibited the consumption of alcohol. The ratification of this
amendment showed the government was actively listening to the citizens requests. It
also showed the nature of progressivism towards immigrants migrating from their home
countries. This amendment was used to convert the immigrants into the American
culture and values. The 19
th
amendment gave women the right to vote. Although this
was a great milestone in history, it did not address the concerns of newly in place laws
such as, the Jim Crow laws that were put in place to racially segregate African Americans
from voting.
6.
What were the goals and methods of the committee on public information during
World War 1?
The goal of the Committee on Public Information was to show the efforts of the war and
why we joined the war in the first place. The government agency provided many public
speakers, arranged rallies, and created posters and pamphlets to promote the war. They
wanted to promote the American troops in a positive way and ensure this was necessary
to protect the United States. President Wilson wanted to use every means of mass
communication to mobilize the support of the Americans war effort.
11.
Identify the goals of those pressing for global change in 1919, and of those who
opposed them.
People across the world were reaching for change, not just the United States. During this
time, we see another push for nationalism by the progressives in the United States. It
was another ploy of shoving the American society onto immigrants. Many American
workers were participating in strikes to demand higher wages and an 8-hour workday.
Unfortunately, the progressives in the end could not offer anything to the immigrants
besides an effort to conform them into the accepted American society.
