1 Corinne Barbo CJ-331 Effective Patrol and Policing Professor Brendan Call Southern New Hampshire University Milestone Three
2 When transitioning from traditional policing to community policing, it is important to know what benefits technology can have in the transition. One way to utilize technology is through the form of social media. If a police department utilizes social media, then they can connect with large groups of members within the community. Law enforcement can post about crimes that have occurred, things to be on the lookout for, and post if an individual is wanted or has been arrested. The officers can also utilize the media to inform the community of different events that are occurring. These events could be a Coffee with a Cop, a Night Out event, or even just other community events that can help bring people together. By using social media to foster the relationships between law enforcement and the community, this can help the community to see what law enforcement deal with. Also, it allows for community members to help by giving information on aspects of things that they may not otherwise do. For instance, an individual may feel better putting a comment on a post versus having to call in or go in and speak with an officer face-to-face. One downfall that could occur with using social media is that sometimes things can be misinterpreted. These misinterpretations could cause there to be an unwarranted amount of hostility towards law enforcement or the way certain things are handled. Using technology-based communications systems, such as social media, will improve community and law enforcement relations because it opens up an expansive dialogue. The dialogue could be to recruit individuals to law enforcement, gain insightful information about the community, help community members get answers, and more. By becoming more involved on social media platforms, it can open a dynamic that would otherwise not be there to build off of. Without social media, the community may only have conversations with law enforcement through bad circumstances such as a traffic stop or a 911 call. If social media is used, then the
3 community and law enforcement can have a closer relationship with one another and feel as though they can reach out when needed for additional helps and supports.
