HIS 100 Module Four Activity Template: Historical Narratives Locate an additional secondary source relevant to your historical event. Use all four of your sources (two primary and two secondary) to answer the questions below. Replace the bracketed text with your responses. Identify the topic you chose to explore: Tulsa Race Massacre Attempt to write the APA style citations for your four sources. Include links to each source. You will not be penalized for incorrect citation format. Richardson, Randi (May 28, 2021) Tulsa Race Massacre, 100 years later: Why it happened and why it’s still relevant today https://www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/tulsa-race-massacre-100- years-later-why-it-happened-why-n1268877 Parrish, M. Otis Clark: Tulsa 1921 Race Massacre . Retrieved from https://voicesofoklahoma.com/interviews/clark-otis/ Ellsworth, S. (n.d.). The Encyclopedia of Oklahoma History and Culture: Tulsa Race Massacre . Retrieved from Oklahoma Historical Society: https://www.okhistory.org/publications/enc/entry.php?entry=TU013 Compare the narratives presented in your primary and secondary sources relevant to your historical event. In comparison, the narratives in these sources all in some way tell the story and the events of the Tulsa race massacre. The secondary sources all provide an outside narrative with a compilation of different pieces of information and statistics regarding the event from the how it started to the death toll. The primary sources all provide narratives from individuals who experienced this event firsthand and shared their experiences. These sources provide more emotion and the ability to experience this event through the individuals’ stories. Describe one narrative that has significantly influenced the contemporary understanding of your historical event. One narrative that influenced the events’ understanding is the primary first-hand narrative, specifically the one of Mary Parrish. The firsthand narrative she tells in her book gives the event much more detail other than what the primary sources can provide. She tells how prosperous the African American community of Tulsa was before the massacre. This narrative also details her experiences on that when the riots broke out. At the time her story was released, the Tulsa media was predominately white and did not give full details of the story. Without her story and her firsthand narrative, we may have never been able to fully understand or grasp how devastating this event was to this community. Explain how the chosen narrative helps you better understand your historical research question. Please provide your revised research question and then explain how the chosen narrative helps you better understand your historical event.
This narrative helps me better understand my research question because it provides more detail than the who or the what. This narrative gives the actual experience of an African American woman living in Tulsa both before and after the massacre happened, which gives more in-depth detail to both inspire more extensive research to and provide a better answer to the research question. As mentioned, this narrative provides better understanding of the Tulsa Massacre because the emotion and experiences detailed in the book gives a deeper story behind the event other than an outside narrative that only states the details and statistics. Reading the book and the story of Mary Parrish I am able to put myself in her shoes and better understand her experiences. Research Question: What were the causes that led to the Tulsa Race Massacre, and how did it affect the local African American community?
