Description of the special needs of these students, including:
Name or types of conditions, syndromes, or disorders in the class: Students in the

prematurely. This does not directly impact her education however she does appear to do
better in modified seating.

low and didn’t fall within average ranges.

Social challenges: Students struggle fitting in with their peers. They have a fear of being
accepted. Some students are quieter than others while some are outgoing.
Equipment, therapies, additional support needed to address classroom challenges:

accommodated seating, access to technology such as chrome books and typing software to
enhance their learning. Students receive adopted paper, visual schedules, check lists, and timers.
Activities the class enjoys. Include a description of any adaptations required for students to
be able to participate in these activities
.
The students enjoy games that get them up and moving. Small group instruction where they have
the ability to discuss in a smaller setting however it is daunting to some. The students feel more
comfortable talking to others that were in previous classes and/or those they have built
relationships with. They also enjoy working with manipulatives.
What kinds of skills are required to work with students who have special needs? How do
you work with others who support your students?
Patience, A LOT of patience. Knowledge of differentiation. Compassion, not just being
compassionate about the kids but compassionate about yourself and what you teach. Having a lot
of care. In my opinion I work well with the individuals on the IEP team and others who may
provide services to my students.
How has your life been impacted by teaching students with special needs?
EDUC 510
I would say from the time that I started helping my little brother he has special needs. From the
time I started helping him with his homework. It really gave me a different lens of what does it
look like to meet everyone’s needs and what does it look like to be a person that is aware of how
our population is so diverse. It changed me as a person because when I see someone in a wheel
car I don’t automatically see the person in the wheelchair I see the person. I don’t think about the
wheelchair I don’t think about how they get around every day. I think about who that person is
and why are they the person that they are. Your special needs can really make you a superstar.
Just teaching children what is your superpower your special needs doesn’t describe you as a
person. You are a person outside of your special needs. Really emphasizing that person’s first
language it definitely changed me to be somebody who thinks about the person and not the
special needs.
Why did you choose to work with students with disabilities?
I choose to work with students with disabilities because of my little brother. In third or fourth
grade he had a really hard time. My dad called me and he said Tia I can’t get your brother to do
this project can you come over here and help him. He was like what do you know about planets
and I was like yeah of course I know about planets I had to learn about planets. So I went over
there and helped him and I just sat with my brother. I just heard what he was saying and just
listened to him. For me it wasn’t that he didn’t know what the planets were he needed that
support of someone to help him through it not necessarily do the work for him but to help him
through it and give him ideas and really be a spark for him. So I was able to be that spark for him
in that moment and it really changed his outlook on school. Ever since then when he needed help
with school work he would call me. He really changed and became a totally different kid at
school. His teachers even called me to find out what I did for him and I just said I listened to
him.

Summary
Tia is a 4
th
grade special education teacher. She has been working in the classroom for ten years
and this is her fourth year as a contract teacher. She works in a general education classroom
where she provides services to five students out of eleven. Out of those students the main
disability is Autism. Although the students present the same disability they are unique in their
own way. Some of her students are outgoing and ready to be the leader while some on the other
hand are shy and trying to form bonds with their peers. Mrs. Jones is a dedicated SPED teacher
and finds her motivation from her younger brother who has special needs. It is obvious that she
takes her life-long experiences and brings them into her classroom. The biggest skill she believes
someone will need to be a SPED teacher is patience. She also believes that it is important to have
compassion for the students and take the time to understand the individual instead of the special
needs. The overall interview with Mrs. Jones was very enlightening to me. Not only could I see
her compassion for her own family member but for the students that are under her guidance.
