Preliminary Writing Plan
For my historical event analysis, I have chosen to focus on the experience of Irish immigrants in the United States in the 19th century. Between 1820 and 1860, more than one third
of all immigrants to the United States came from Ireland. Most of the immigrants settled along the East Coast. Those who immigrated were mostly Catholic, poor, and uneducated. Irish immigrants were seen as their own race just like African Americans. Therefore, they also experienced discrimination and backlash for their presence. The discrimination and backlash were more prominent in major cities like Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. This event is important because it shows what the Irish had to go through when immigrating to the United States. It’s important to know the obstacles that were faced because it provides more enlightenment on the Irish. This enlightenment can help you better understand and handle future events that might occur with the Irish. (Mindedge, 2016)
While examining the Irish immigration experience, I will be focusing on the impact the Irish’s way of life had on the economy. Specifically, I will try to answer the following research question: How did Irish immigrants' financial status, education, values, beliefs, religion, views, and perceptions impact the United States economy? When searching for sources my process was to look at the reliability and the relevance of a source. I needed to make sure that not only was the source reliable, but also that it contained information that would help me answer my research
question. Search terms that I have used in my research so far include: 19th-century Irish immigration, American Irish and US economy, Irish immigrants impact on US economy, and Irish immigrants 19th-century and politics. Some of these keywords did not help me find sources
that I could use. However, some of them did narrow down the search enough so I could locate the types of sources I needed. The first secondary source I found was “American Slavery, Irish Freedom : Abolition, Immigrant Citizenship, and the Transatlantic Movement for Irish Repeal” by Angela Murphy. The second secondary source I found was “Ireland's New Worlds : Immigrants, Politics, and Society in the United States and Australia, 1815–1922” by Malcolm Campbell. Both of these sources are appropriate and relevant to my topic because they both discuss the impact Irish immigration had on American culture and politics. Culture and politics both play a role in our economy. The difference between these two sources, is that the second source also focuses on the impacts in Australia whereas the first source does not. The second source also goes more into depth on how economic, social, and cultural conditions impacted the Irish immigration experience. The first source does highlight this as well, but it does not go as in depth as the second source. Overall, both sources provide valuable information that would help me answer my research question. After looking for sources that would help me in answering my research question, I realized there were very few sources. Even though I was able to find two secondary sources, I believe that these would not be enough to answer my research question thoroughly. However, these sources I was able to find helped me develop a new research question related to the historical event I selected. This new research question is: “How did the American culture impact
the Irish immigrants experience?”.
