Report
Welfare during colonial times concerning the great awakening and religion as well as enlightenment is society was notably altered for the releases. Ordinary people were encouraged to make a personal connection with god, relying on ministers of the religion such as Methodists, Baptists, and others who quickly grew in encouragement relating to the influence of prominent philosophers. Colonial development resulted from several religious ideas and influenced inquisitive beliefs relating to freedom, justice, and liberty. All these rivers had a strong influence on development and welfare during colonial times. The role of religion provides people with awareness about several idealistic developments and thoughts about welfare as well as enlightenment concerning freedom, justice, and liberty. There was a great awakening at that time relating to science and reason over faith and superstition, which strongly influenced the people to believe in the system of maintaining government programs and several ideas that related to the safeguarding and well-being of the people in colonial times. Several other activities relating to the United States representing injustice and manpower and several other welfare developments relating to the beginning of widespread combating poverty and several opportunities relating to employment and other social welfare groups to sensitize government organizations and provide quality to the social services that upgrade the welfare of the vulnerable group of people. So these are the basic reasons behind the welfare during colonial times, including the effects of religion, enlightenment, and the great awakening. Response # 1 You make several intriguing points about colonial welfare and the moral implications of poverty. I concur that the English poor laws had a significant impact on welfare in the colonies and the Great Awakening and the enlightenment influenced how poverty was regarded and addressed. I concur that we have a long way to go with regards to how we perceive and treat the impoverished. In reality, there are a number of facts that contribute to poverty, including lack of education, lack of opportunity, and mental illness, which are frequently blamed. I believe it is essential to keep in mind that poverty is not a moral failing. It is a difficult problem with no simple solutions. However, I believe we can do better. We can begin by increasing funding for education and job training, as well as mental health services. We can also strive to establish a society where everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed. Response #2 Historically, local authorities assigned “overseers of the poor” to investigate poverty and problems such as physical and mental infirmities, criminality, and vagrancy. Their responsibilities included assessing need, collecting and distributing cash through a combination of taxes, private donations, and church collections, and deciding the fates of destitute or deviant citizens. Work was expected of everyone; therefore almsgiving (poor relief) was limited since people believed it discouraged work and contributed to immorality Veterans of war were an exception. Public dependents were classified as worthy or impotent poor (old or mentally or physically disabled) and maybe deserving of assistance; unworthy poor (sturdy beggars-able-bodied individuals in poverty); and dependent children- poor, unloved, abandoned, or orphaned. Local church leaders or other appointees were tasked with supervising the relief, and a required tax rate
system was put in place, with failure to contribute resulting in jail time. However, the ordinance also stated that vagrants who refused to work faced imprisonment, whipping, branding, stoning, or death. Additionally begging was prohibited, and poor houses were established.
