Report
Thanksgiving 1621 In the spring the pilgrims planted their crops. After the spring rain and the summer warmth the corn grew tall. During the summer the pilgrims farmed the fields and tilled the soil. The bay was plentiful with fish and lobster. Under Squanto's teaching they had learned how to grow crops and fish to survive. All the pilgrims were healthy after the bountiful harvest. After the harvest they had time to hunt. They hunted wild turkey, geese, ducks, black bears, and deer. In one day, they hunted and killed enough food for a week. They took time to praise God on the sabbath day. They thanked God for His provision and mercy. In the fall when the leaves were turning colors, it was time for Thanksgiving celebration. The women of New Plymouth began preparing a great meal. Squanto invited Massoit and his chiefs. Massoit showed up with 90 warriors. They brought 5 deer with them for the meal. Their celebration included a shooting contest, and a drum and drill show. The Indians performed their chants and dances. They celebrated for three days, and no one was in a hurry to go home. Their future would bring hard work. Even though the English where still strangers this was their promise land.
The English went to a whole new land that they were not familiar with. The Indians invited them in and taught them how to hunt and fish. In the spring and the summer, they taught them how to grow crops. They had plenty of fish and lobster during the spring and summer time. In the fall they planned to celebrate Thanksgiving and invited the Indians to join them. The future ahead looked bright but was filled with many unknowns. They trusted God to provide and protect for them. This is how we came to celebrate Thanksgiving today. Squanto's perspective From the Indians perspective who are this people? Why do they dress like this? Why did they decide to come here? Why don't they know how to hunt and fish? Why do they build houses? Who is this God they believe in? Are they here to harm us?
