HIST-1302-81422 September 22, 2020 The Progressives The short film on the McWane pipe corporation revealed the disasters that happen when the company prioritized profits over workers' safety. Not only do they treat their employees badly, but they also approached the environment with a complete violation. They had over 400 violations associated with the environment and proceeded to use careless and unsafe waste management procedures. Sadly, when these greedy corrupt corporations become involved in the capitalist system, they will destroy the lives of many for a few profits. As I also read in chapter 13 from Howard Zinn 's book "The Socialist Challenge," I learned that there were many factory accidents that actually occurred during the progressive era which resulted in many deaths and illnesses. This was shocking to me since the only thing I was taught in my previous history classes about the progressive era was how Upton Sinclair wrote “The Jungle” to reveal the horrible working conditions in meatpacking factories in Chicago. However, after reading chapter 13, I learned that there were government laws violating workers' free speech, child labor, and labor union workers demanding better working conditions and reduced working hours. Furthermore, the chapter 7 "The Land of Opportunity," from Lies My Teacher Told Me, Loewen argues that social class is certainly the most important portion of society, yet it is commonly left out of textbooks. I find it very misleading the fact that history textbooks often promote the narrative that everyone has equal opportunity, but instead disregard the social structure and inequality of opportunities which play a significant role.
