DEN 4426 Population Health S23 Lab 5 Part 1 Submit your completed worksheet from the Week 12 homework on Child & Elder Abuse. Part 2 Please watch the following short film “The Appointment – Dementia Awareness”. This video was published by Health Education England and is aimed at dental professionals to raise awareness of issues that clients with dementia face when attending a dental appointment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnPUq00UA8c Following the film, please answer the following questions. Your response should be approximately 500 words in full sentences (not point form) and include references in APA formatting where required. 1. Describe, in your own words, the experiences of the older woman in the film. The short film "The Appointment – Dementia Awareness" depicts an older woman's dental appointment experience, which is complicated by her struggle with dementia. She appears disoriented and anxious upon arrival at the dental practice, a common challenge for individuals with dementia in unfamiliar environments. Throughout the appointment, she faces difficulty understanding dental procedures and instructions, leading to confusion and frustration. Her memory impairment is evident as she forgets recent events, including her dental history and medication intake. The woman also exhibits sensory issues, being uncomfortable with loud noises and bright lights. Her reluctance during the examination highlights the importance of gentle and patient care for individuals with dementia. The film emphasizes the need for sensitivity, compassion, and tailored approaches to ensure a positive experience for such clients in dental settings. 2. Explain how you, as a dental hygienist, could make the woman’s experience more positive. By creating a welcoming environment with soft lighting and possibly soothing music to reduce anxiety. (Shuman, n.d.) Using simple language, clear instructions, and non-verbal cues will aid in effective communication given her cognitive limitations. (Chalmers, 2000) Building trust through understanding her dental history and preferences will promote comfort and security. (Shuman, n.d.) To prevent sensory overload, I will be mindful of environmental factors like noise levels and bright lights. Customizing the treatment approach, simplifying procedures, and considering physical limitations will ensure a positive and comfortable experience for the older woman and other dementia clients. (Chalmers, 2000)
DEN 4426 Population Health S23 3. What are some of the common oral conditions experienced by older adults? What appointment modifications and oral hygiene recommendations may be necessary? (Your response should be supported by referencing published and credible material using APA format) Common oral conditions in older adults include tooth decay, gum disease, tooth loss, oral cancer, and tooth sensitivity. (ODA, 2021) Dental hygienists can accommodate older adults with these conditions by offering breaks during treatment, and using ergonomic equipment to ensure comfort. (Shannon et al., 2022) Oral hygiene recommendations include regular check-ups, proper oral hygiene practices, and tailored dental care products for sensitive teeth or dry mouth to maintain oral health in older adults. (Shannon et al., 2022) 4. When addressing oral health care issues, what other professionals and caregivers should be part of the interprofessional team? Describe their role. The team should include a dentist responsible for diagnosis and treatment planning, dental hygienists for preventive care, primary care physicians managing overall health and medications, caregivers supporting daily oral hygiene routines.
