HIS 100 Module Three Activity Template: Revising Questions Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Identify the topic you chose to explore: The Tulsa Massacre Identify a historical perspective that could be applied to your historical event. All three perspectives - social, economic, and political - are valuable in analyzing the Tulsa Massacre. Each offers unique insights into the dynamics and factors that contributed to the severity of the event. However, the political perspective is the most important lens to use when considering my research question. It examines the actions or inactions of government officials, policies, and the influence of political institutions. Analyzing how political decisions, such as law enforcement's failure to protect the black community or government officials' lack of intervention, contributed to the severity of the massacre can provide a broader understanding of the historical context. Revise your research question based on evidence from your primary and secondary sources. How did the actions of law enforcement, government officials, and community leaders contribute to the escalation of the severity of the Tulsa Massacre? Which specific action(s) taken by law enforcement, government officials, and/or community leaders can be identified as the key factor(s) that escalated the severity of the Tulsa Massacre? Explain how historical perspective and evidence from sources influenced your finalized research question. By diving into the historical context and examining evidence from various sources, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of the Tulsa Massacre and the time it occurred. This exploration has given me insights into the cultural, legal, and social norms of that era, which has helped me grasp the event more comprehensively. It has also shown me how personal beliefs and societal values shape our interpretations. For example, someone like Dick might view the incident in the elevator as a simple accident with no significant harm, while Sarah, a young white woman alone with a black man in an elevator in 1921, might have seen it as an assault. These different perspectives highlight how personal experiences and societal attitudes greatly influence our understanding. Considering the historical perspective and examining evidence from various sources has greatly influenced the direction of my research. It has led me to investigate the specific actions taken by law enforcement, government officials, and community leaders that played a crucial role in escalating the severity of the Tulsa Massacre. This approach takes into account the power dynamics, racial tensions, and the involvement of different stakeholders in the event, shedding light on the factors that contributed to its devastating outcomes. As a result, the historical 1
perspective and evidence have been instrumental in shaping my research question, allowing for a more nuanced understanding of the era and emphasizing the impact of personal experiences and societal norms on interpretations. 2
