Compare the narratives presented in your primary and secondary sources relevant to your historical event.
The narrative of my primary sources is the telling of the stories of the event from being there. The first source is the recounting of an emergency dispatcher telling her story of all the calls of sick citizens and their family members. While the second primary source provides a story with photos taken at different locations during the historical event. The secondary sources have a similar narrative in telling the story of the tragic events in London. My secondary sources discuss
more about the scientific aspects discovered following the events and what led to causing the deadly fog. Describe one narrative that has significantly influenced the contemporary understanding of your historical event.
One narrative that has given me the best perspective and understanding of my chosen historical event is the information I found in Death comes from the air. The story gives some information pertaining to condition of London following the war before the historical event began. It continues to draw a devastating picture of what life was like leading up to and during the historical event of the hazardous fog that took so many lives. I felt as though I could understand
the fear, confusion, and anxiety that everyone living through it had. The story sets the stage for understanding the shortage of quality coal to heat homes with the cold winter approaching. The
low-quality coal, along with the strange weather conditions, had combined to create the health hazard which killed and hospitalized so many unsuspecting people.
Explain how the chosen narrative helps you better understand your historical research question. Please provide your revised research question and then explain how the chosen narrative helps you better event.
What prior knowledge was there regarding the coal which could have helped to prevent the level of toxicity in the air leading to the number of deaths and sickness?
While working on revising my research question I had read the chosen narrative. After reading the story it gave me a more narrowed perspective that I wanted to focus on regarding the coal used to heat the homes of Londonderry citizens. It was known that the coal being used was a lower quality and burned dirtier. This was known prior to the historical event and should have been considered prior to lifting the limitation on consumption of the coal which could have lessened the effects, it may not have prevented the event, but it could have potentially saved some lives. Pollution was very known at that time, but the aftermath of the great London smog, air pollution was taken more seriously and from further studies new laws were enacted. This narrative played a big part in how I revised my research question and better understand the historical event.
