What was the Missouri Compromise and what long-reaching impact did it have? Describe Northern uses of Puritan imagery during the Missouri Compromise debates and Southern responses to these arguments. Your Answer:
The Missouri Compromise was when both Maine and Missouri wanted to enter into the Union. The government was already equaled out as far as the amount of slave and free states. The only resolution that they could come up with was admitting Maine as a free state and Missouri as a slave state, but it would outlaw slavery above the 36 30 latitude.
Northern Puritans turned the words of John Locke from what he had originally he had meant about a city on a hill, the elect, wilderness, and the covenant into what it they believed it meant for that time. The city on a hill turned from the Massachusetts colony into the United States itself. The Puritans now believed that the elect meant those that were wanting slavery abolished, and the covenant wasn't so much with God anymore but with the future generations. Finally, the wilderness they believed in was slavery. Now
the Southerners responses were well thought out. Many of them were lawyers so they argued using the law and the constitution to defend why slavery was right in their opinion. Excellent work summarizing the major points of the presentation here with concrete examples.
