Discussion Board #2- EDUC 631
Universal Design for Learning
Thread: Universal Design for Learning (UDL) focuses on providing educational experiences to meet the needs of diverse learners (Moore & Diehl, 2018). Online content creators continue to apply UDL principles as they create content (Moore & Diehl, 2018). Moore & Diehl (2018) state there are numerous of empirical studies that support the value of applying UDL principles when designing online learning. For this discussion you will want to explain how the three main principles of UDL can impact distance learning. You will also need to explain why you believe meeting the needs of all your learners is important from a Biblical perspective. You will want to look to see how Christ ministered to others while He was here on Earth and how He met the needs of individuals and did not have a “one
-size-fits-
all” approach to ministry.
Reply: Respond to your classmates and provide feedback. Use relevant scripture and scholarly sources to support your view. Submit your thread by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Thursday, and submit your replies by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Sunday. _________________________________________________________________ The three main principals of Universal Design Learning (UDL) should drive distance learning overall approach for both the teacher and especially the students. Teachers should ensure that their lessons and the method of delivery are such that will engage all students on all levels. Just as with face-to-face instruction teachers must be able to introduce and facilitate a discussion in a variety of ways. This could mean with a song, a short video clip, a commercial, a slide presentation, a joke, a starter question, anything other than just having the students looking at the screen and thinking all will “get
it.”
Universal Design Learning should focus on giving teachers flexibility on their approach and delivery method along with the demonstration of knowledge allowing all students the opportunity to succeed on every level. Reaching the students where they are. In my opinion, learning through Universal Design Learning should be engaging, encouraging, enlightening, enriching, Jesus was able to meet the needs of the Samaritan women individually. He knew that the journey through Samaria was usual but, he also knew that he would encounter those that needed him. Jesus being at the well was not coincident. He waited six hours to minister to the Samaritan women. He knew that the women went to the well at that time so that she would not have to encounter others. He meets her where she was. However, he used this opportunity to speak to her in a way that he knew would cause her to engage. “Will
you give me a drink?”
(John 4: 7). Jesus knew she would question this and him. The Samaritan woman said to him, “You
are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?”
(For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.

) (John 4:9). As educators, we must meet students where they are to bring them to where they need to be. We must find ways that will engage students and their individual needs. Educators should ways that allow students to make conscious inquiries and feel comfortable doing so. Meeting students’
individual needs give them a greater possibility of success. Knowing that every student's success will look different.
