Healthcare is dynamic and complex. Nurses graduating from a master’s degree program must demonstrate competencies that will allow them to respond to current and emerging trends in healthcare. Each week, you will address one or more of the 9 Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing. As you plan, develop, implement and evaluate your Informatics practicum project, reflect on how this project and your graduate education have prepared you to meet the growing needs of healthcare and the diverse populations we serve. This week you will address Essential II: Organizational Systems and Leadership. Introduction The evolution of healthcare is constant due to evidence of technological advancement, diversity in patient demographics, and changes in healthcare policies. Graduate nurses from a nursing informatics program must possess the competencies to adjust to the dynamics and complexities of the healthcare environment and contribute to the enhancement of overall quality of care and patient outcomes. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2011), organizational and systems leadership are critical to the promotion of high-quality and safe patient care. The 9 Essentials of Master of Education in Nursing is a framework for education that prepares nursing graduates with the understanding and expertise to address healthcare opportunities and challenges. Organizational and Systems Leadership Organizational and System Leadership are critical in recognizing patient safety and high- quality of care. All levels of nursing leadership must advocate more actively for and invest resources in, a profession that is both complemented and extended by digital technology (Booth et al., 2021). Leadership in nursing informatics should require effective working relationships, critical and ethical decision-making, and a systems perspective such as in leadership roles,
interprofessional collaboration, education and training, ethical considerations, regulatory compliance, quality improvement, management, data management, and integration of informatics. Key Points in Project Objective As I focus on my project objectives, I am expected to take the role of a leader and the responsibility of guiding and implementing telemedicine within my organization. The implementation of telemedicine amongst our nursing staff can optimize and ensure the system is aligned with the goal of improving patient care and outcomes. I will also find myself in collaboration with other staff including the providers, information technology specialists nursing administration, and other disciplines to ensure that the implementation of telemedicine is successful. Staff education and training regarding the use of telemedicine will be led by a nursing informatics leader regarding how to use the system and ongoing support will be accessible to keep nursing staff up to date with best practices. There are challenges that may arise with the project including ethical dilemmas concerning health information. Ethical considerations should be aligned with the practice of telemedicine. Regulatory compliance which includes HIPAA will ensure that telemedicine meets the legal standards. Leaders play a critical role in quality improvement. They participate in taking initiative within the organization by identifying areas of improvement within the system and among staff. There will be significant changes in clinical workflow when implementing telemedicine and management should assist the staff in adapting to these changes to become successful. The staff needs to understand data management on how to collect information,
document, retrieve, and analyze information in making clinical decisions. Lastly, the integration of telemedicine in a busy clinical setting can improve patient care, safety, outcomes, and efficiency. The staff should be familiar with the electronic health system, computers, and other technological devices that can be used during telemedicine. Conclusion Organizational and system leadership play a critical role in the integration and management of my project objective which focuses on telemedicine. Nurses with informatics expertise are leaders who can assist with ensuring the security of health data, improving patient care and outcomes, and promoting healthcare delivery using telemedicine.
